On Tuesday the Panthers traveled to Castleton where the two teams matched up their top arms when Chatham’s Brian Gauthier squared off with Division I-bound Jaime Schultz. Joe Cozzolino set the tone early for Chatham when he launched a first-inning home run. In the bottom of the inning, Schultz responded with a home run of his own to tie the score.
Chatham retook the lead in the second inning when four walks and RBI singles by Cole Gleason and Matt Fischer helped to plate five more Panther runs. The Wildcats responded in the third by putting up four runs of their own to cut the Panther lead to 6-5.
The potent Panther offense added two more to their lead in the fourth when Gauthier shut down the Wildcats in the fourth through sixth, not allowing a runner past second base. Chatham added seven more runs down the stretch as they cruised to the 15-5 win.
Gauthier pitched six innings earning the win for Chatham, giving up 5 runs, 4 earned on 2 hits, and 6 walks, while striking out 8. Chris Williams pitched a scoreless seventh, striking out 2 and walking 1. Cozzolino carried the big stick at the plate for the Panthers, going 2-3 with 2 walks, 3 RBIs, and 3 runs. Jordan Sirani and Cole Gleason each picked up 2 hits and 2 RBIs.
"I am proud of the way we played as a team," said Panther coach Scott Steltz via email. "Everyday someone different in our lineup steps up and contributes either with hits or good at-bats or moving runners, and that’s what it takes to win ball games."
In game two on Wednesday, the Panthers wrapped up their undefeated season with another big win. The Panthers put up 3 runs in the second, 2 more in the third, added 3 more in the fourth, and 2 more in the fifth to top Maple Hill 10-2.
Brian Guathier finished with a single and a double, while scoring twice and driving in a run. Cozzolino added 2 singles, a walk, and a sacrifice fly.
Cody Portin was in and out of trouble the whole day on the mound for Chatham but came through when he was needed. Portin went the distance allowing 2 runs on 7 scattered hits and 6 walks while striking out 4.
"Cody battled today against a good hitting team," said Steltz. "I couldn’t be prouder of this team. From day one, they have always hustled, worked hard and gone about their business in a professional manor. Going undefeated in the league this year is a major accomplishment, especially with the strong teams and good arms around the Patroon, and hopefully it is something they will never forget."
As Chatham gets ready for sectionals and a likely number one seed, they will play a nonleague tune-up at Watervliet on Saturday. |
