CHATHAM BASEBALL IMPROVES TO 14-1 WITH WIN OVER TITANS
05-05-09 - Monday Chatham baseball headed to Taconic Hills to face the Titans on the diamond. Chatham's pitching and defense held the game scoreless until their offense was able to wear down the Titans pitching and take the game 16-2.
Chatham got on the board in the top of the third when they plated three runs. Brian Gauthier led off the inning with a double to start the rally. Joe Cozzolino followed with a triple, and Ryen Boehme knocked in Cozzolino on a ground ball to second. Cole Gleason drove a single through the left side of the infield to score Boehme.
In the top of the fourth, Chatham added one run on a lead-off triple by Parker Niles and a single by Brian Gauthier. Chatham scored four more runs in the fifth on three walks and a double by Parker Niles to score all three runners and clear the bases. Niles then scored by stealing home. In the sixth, Chatham increased their lead by two more runs on hits by Gleason, Niles, and Gauthier.
To closeout the game in the seventh inning, Chatham added six more runs on fielding errors by Taconic Hills and hits by Evan Young, Jordan Sirani (two hits in the inning), Cole Gleason, and a triple by Brian Gauthier. This stretched the lead to 16 runs. Taconic Hills answered in the bottom of the seventh getting two runs on hits by Tucker McNamee, Nick Warren, and Tom Drury.
Offensively for the Titans, Nick Warren had two singles, Drury had a single, and McNamee a double. The pitching was done by Mike Jacobsen and Pat Lydon, and they combined for 16 runs allowed on 17 hits. They struck out six and walked two.
Offensively for the Panthers, Parker Niles was 3 for 6 and a homerun shy of the cycle. He scored 3 runs, had 2 steals, and 6 RBIs. Brian Gauthier was also a homerun shy of the cycle, going 4 for 6 with 2 runs and an RBI. Jordan Sirani was 3 for 5 with a run, and Cole Gleason was 3 for 5 with 3 runs and an RBI. Cody Portin went the distance for the Panthers pitching all seven innings. He struck out 5, allowed 4 hits, and walked 3, while giving up 2 earned runs.
"Jacobsen did a good job of keeping us off balance until he tired out. Cody did a good job against Taconic, using mainly his fastball and location. We played good defense behind him, turning a few double plays early to get out of jams and also having Parker Niles take away a hit from Lydon on a drive to right-center field," Chatham head coach Scott Stelz reported.
Chatham record is now 14-1 overall and 11-0 in league.
