CHATHAM BASEBALL WINS BACK-AND-FORTH BATTLE WITH BISHOP MAGINN
05-05-09 - Bishop Maginn visited Chatham on Saturday afternoon for a nonleague baseball matchup. The Griffins stepped off the bus and started swinging. With four consecutive two-out hits in the top of the first, the Griffins jumped out to a 4-0 lead.
The lead held until the bottom of the third when Chatham answered with 6 runs. Ryen Boehme, Jordan Sirani, Mike Sirani, Matt Fischer all had RBI singles in the innings. Cole Gleason added a RBI walk while Evan Young hit a RBI sac fly. Chatham added 2 more in the fourth when Joe Cozzolino led off with a single, followed by a single by Ryen Boehme and a RBI single by Jordan Sirani. The next two Chatham batters were retired, but with two outs Evan Young drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Mike Sirani and widen the lead to 8-4.
The Griffins bounced back in the fifth when they added four runs on four hits, an error, and a walk. Chatham didn't let the lead hold for long. Joe Cozzolino reached on a one-out error, and Ryen Boehme tripled to the fence to score Cozzolino. Jordan Sirani then hit a sac fly to center to score Boehme and make it 10-8 in favor of the Panthers.
The Griffins had runners in both the sixth and seventh, but Chris Williams escaped trouble with a double play in the sixth and stranded the runner in the seventh to seal the win.
Chris Williams picked up the win for the Panthers. Williams pitched two and two-thirds innings allowing one hit, one walk and striking out one batter. Matt Fischer went four and a third for the Panthers as the starter, allowing 8 hits, 8 runs (6 earned), a walk and 3 Ks.
Chatham Coach Scott Steltz reported, “Matt pitched well today. He got ahead of hitters and made them hit tough pitches. He had a low pitch count because he came right after hitters. Bishop Maginn is a good hitting team, and he did a nice job with keeping them off balance. Offensively we did things right. We moved runners around, got our sacrifices down, and handled the ball well up and down the lineup."
Ryen Boehme led the attack going 4 for 4, including a triple with 2 RBIs and 2 runs. Jordan Sirani was 2 for 2 with a walk, 2 runs scored, a sac fly, and 3 RBIs. Joe Cozzolino was 1 for 4 with 3 runs scored, and Evan Young had a pair of RBIs.
For the Griffins, Davante Buie was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Jeffers and Gaffney had two-hit days as well.
Chatham record is now 13-1 overall and 10-0 in league. Next up for the Chatham squad is Taconic Hills on Monday at 4 p.m. at Taconic.
