05-02-09 - Columbia-Greene needed to finish their season with six straight wins to qualify for playoffs, and on Wednesday they took a step in the right direction when they picked up a pair of wins at Delhi. In game one, the Twins pounded out a 13-5 win before forcing an early stoppage of game two in the fifth inning with C-GCC up 14-4.
The Twins jumped on Delhi quickly in game one, scoring 2 runs in the first and fourth before adding one more in the fifth for a 5-0 lead. But Delhi fought back and scored 5 of their own in the fifth. Columbia-Greene didn’t let the comeback stop their bats as they put up 6 runs in the sixth and 2 more in the seventh en route to the win.
Meghan McNeff was fantastic on the mound in game one, pitching a complete game and allowing just 4 hits while striking out 9. At the plate, Maggie McBroom went 3 for 4 with a double, triple and 3 RBIs. Amanda Osborn went 3 for 4 with 4 RBIs, and Cabrina Collesides added 2 hits, 2 runs scored, and an RBI.
In game two, both teams posted runs in the first inning and the Twins added 2 more in the third for a 3-1 lead. Delhi again fought back, scoring 3 runs of their own in the fourth for a 4-3 lead. In the fifth inning, C-GCC exploded for 8 runs to help put the game away. Angel Rivenburg and Maggie McBroom each collected big bases-loaded hits in that inning for the Twins, with Rivenburg knocking in a double and McBroom a single.
McNeff again threw a complete game, this time striking out 3 in the win. McBroom added 2 hits to her daily total and drove in 4 runs. Rivenburg’s bases-loaded double drove in 3 runs, while Collesides added 3 RBIs and 3 runs.
"It was a good two wins," said Twins coach Pete Dedrick via email. "We battled early, stayed focused, and had some timely hitting."
The Twins improve to 5-9 in the league as they travel to North Country for a doubleheader on Friday. The Twins have to win those two games at North Country along with their 1 o’clock doubleheader on Sunday at home against Finger Lakes to even their league record at 9-9 and qualify for the playoffs.
