After finishing up an undefeated regular season with a Central Hudson Valley League title, the Germantown girls’ basketball team followed that up with a Section II Class D title. But on Wednesday night at SUNY Potsdam, the Lady Clippers hopes for a state title came to an end with a 54-34 loss to Hammond.
Early both teams had their offenses clicking, and Germantown was able to stay close to the defending state champions, trailing by just three points, 16-13, after one quarter. Unfortunately for the Clippers, they could never get all the way back. Hammond outscored them in each of the last three quarters en route to the ten-point decision.
The Clippers’ defense struggled to contain senior center Aubrie Dunn, who accounted for 20 of her team’s 54 points. Dunn got to the free-throw line twelve times, converting nine of them. Germantown sent Dunn’s teammates to the line only just a combined eight times, while holding Hammond to only one three-pointer.
For the Clippers, only player, Victoria Fuchs, reached double digits, scoring 10 points, including a pair of triples. Section II Class D Tournament Most Valuable Player Taylor Race was held to only her second single digit scoring game of the year with 7 points. Class D Tournament First Team member Caitlin Briggs was held scoreless in the game. Suzy Wright chipped in with 6, as the Clippers as a team knocked down three shots from beyond the arc and made 7 of 16.
Germantown finishes their season with a record of 23-1. The Clippers will lose just three players from their sectional title-winning squad, but those three are all key. Power forward Caitlin Briggs’ rebounding and low-post scoring will certainly be missed, and Suzy Wright was the engine that made the team run from the point guard spot.
Next season still looks bright with the return of Race along with Melissa and Victoria Fuchs on the wings. Kim Kreig looks to be the future point guard, while Pattricia Camerson looks like a potential defensive stopper in the back court
