06-08-09 - For the first time in eighteen years, the Germantown girls’ softball team is the Section II champion. The Clippers, the top seed in Class D, captured the title with a 3-0 victory over second-seeded Hartford on Friday in Clifton Park.
Sophomore lefty Carissa Phillips took the hill for the Clippers and walked the first batter she faced, then allowed the next runner on via a fielder’s choice that got the lead-off batter out.
Germantown celebrates their win
A single by the three-hitter for Hartford was the only hit they could muster off Phillips as she and the Clippers went on to retire the next 18 batters they faced until an error in the final inning allowed another on. Of those 18 batters retired, not a single one got the ball out of the infield. Phillips struck out five in that stretch and also induced five ground-ball outs hit back to the mound, where she handled them with ease.
After their top three hitters were retired in order in the first inning, the Clippers bats got going in the bottom of the second, when Courtney Parlman led off with a single. After a fly out and a walk by Nicole Van Alstyne, Hartford recorded another out to put two on with two outs. Lauren Fix stepped to the plate and drove in Parlman with a single as both runners advanced on the throw. Victoria Fuchs stepped in and hit a bloop single to left to score another run as the Clippers took an early 2-0 lead.
The Clippers kept adding hits on Hartford pitcher Jackie Petteys and in the fourth added another run. With two outs, Fuchs picked up another single. The ball was misplayed by the outfielder, then she overthrew it allowing Fuchs to go all the way to third. Patti Cameron then put the ball in play with a hard hit toward second, allowing her to reach base safely and Fuchs to come around for the eventual final run.
Up next for the Clippers is a Monday showdown at the Adirondack Sports Complex against Crown Port of Section VII.
