06-05-09 - The Ichabod Crane girls’ softball team fell at the hands of second-seeded Lansingburgh on Tuesday in Colonie 6-4 ending their season after finishing in a tie for second place in the Patroon Conference and earning the third seed in the Section II Class A tournament.

‘Burgh struck first in the opening stanza, scoring two early runs on some mistakes by the Riders. The Riders quickly responded though in the second inning, scoring four runs of their own. Courtney Hill and Keira MacDonald each reached on bunts, and Becca Smith got on base via a fielder’s choice before Alli Pullen got a run-in with a sacrifice fly in the inning. With the bases loaded, Lindsay Drumm launched an RBI triple to right field to tack on the final three runs of the inning.
In the fourth, ‘Burgh struck again, this time scoring three runs in the inning to retake the lead 5-4. The Riders threatened throughout the rest of the contest but were not able to get another run in. ‘Burgh added an insurance run in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-4, where it would end.
Jess Van Alphen went the distance on the mound for the Riders, giving up 6 runs, 4 earned, on 6 hits and 9 walks, while striking out 6. At the plate, Van Alphen added a single to her pitching performance, while Smith notched 2 of the Riders’ 5 hits. Drumm’s lone hit, the triple in the second inning, drove in 3 runs, while Pullen had a double and an RBI in the loss.
The Riders will lose just four players off this year’s squad, but will include All Conference short stop Alli Pullen, arguably the league’s top offensive and defensive threat. Center fielder Keira MacDonald and right fielder Courtney Hill are also both seniors, and their speed and gloves in the outfield will be missed.
