RIDERS MOVE INTO ANOTHER BASEBALL FINAL FOUR

Greg Dedrick

06-01-09 - It wasn’t the easiest win and it certainly wasn’t the prettiest, but the Ichabod Crane baseball team took another step toward its third consecutive Section II Class A crown on Saturday by defeating Burnt Hills of the Suburban Council 6-5.

In the third inning, the Riders got on the board first, taking advantage of Spartan errors and walks to plate three early runs. In the fourth inning the Spartans put up 2, to close the gap to 3-2. With two runners on base and two outs, Burnt Hills ripped a double to deep center field to score both runners. As the batter made his way toward third, a terrific relay from Phil Basile to Derick Horn to Seth Williams gunned him down to help keep the one-point lead intact.

The Riders responded in the bottom of the fourth, when Josh Ingham singled to right and Alex Mastrianni followed that with a single to right center. Mastrianni went to second, and when the cutoff man tried to throw him out, the ball got away, allowing Ingham to score and Mastrianni to move to third, where he was stranded. Still, the Riders extended their lead to 4-2.

The fifth and top of the sixth went by quickly before the Riders added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. After an infield single, Ingham came through again for ICC, this time with a two-run home run that looked like it would seal the game.

After cruising through much of the game, the Riders ace Ingham struggled to finish out the contest. Burnt Hills put together four hits and a walk to slice into the lead when Seth Williams came in to relieve Ingham. After an infield single loaded the bases, Williams struck out a batter, then induced a force play at third base. But the throw got away, cutting the lead to one with still two on. The final Burnt Hills batter hit the ball well, but Basile in centerfield got under the ball to record the final out.

Ingham had a fantastic day at the plate, hitting a single, double, and a home run while scoring three times and driving in 3 runs. On the mound Ingham pitched 6+ innings allowing 5 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks, and hit one batter while striking out four. Williams closed out the game, giving up no runs of his own while striking out one.

Up next for ICC is a game against eighth-seeded Mohonasen who upset the top-seed Lansingburgh. Last year, the Riders and Warriors met up in the Class A title game with ICC coming away victorious.
