06-03-09 - The top-seeded Clippers of Germantown advanced to the Section II Class D softball sectional game on Monday after a 3-2 win in ten innings over fourth-seeded Argyle. The win moves Germantown into the finals on Friday, where they will square off against number two seeded Hartford, of the Adirondack League.
Argyle jumped on top in the first inning, scoring one run to begin the game, after which both teams then saw their offenses go into a slump. In the sixth inning, the Clippers got the response they needed from two senior leaders when Suzy Wright singled and was then driven home by a Caitlin Briggs double.
With the game tied, the teams continued to battle inning after inning until the tenth where, when an inning begins for the rest of the contest, each team starts with a runner on second base. Argyle quickly took advantage of the rule and scored a run in the top of the tenth, putting the pressure back on the Clippers.
An error put runners on first and second, and Lauren Fix grounded out to advance the runners to second and third. Back-to-back singles by Victoria Fuchs and Patti Cameron scored the tying and go-ahead run to give the Clippers the victory.
Facing off against the defending Class D champions, sophomore pitcher Carissa Phillips pitched the full ten innings giving up 7 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts.
