After a tough league loss earlier this week, the Chatham Panthers volleyball team continued to find its footing with a second consecutive win. On Thursday, the Panthers hosted Cobleskill-Richmondville and walked away with a 3-1 win. Chatham won by scores of 25-22, 25-11, 23-25, and 25-9.
Despite the win and the scores, Chatham coach Matt Torrey was not pleased with his team’s effort. “Our passing was terrible, we forced our setters to scramble,” he said via email. Despite passer shortcomings, the Panther setters still racked up some impressive stats. Josh Kohrs finished with 20 assists, and Wade Klinger added 11.
Brandon Pitcher led the way serving for 12 points for the Panthers. “Brandon served to location well, and I hope his anticipation and floor coverage becomes contagious to the rest of the team,” added the coach. “Sophomore setter Nick Faxon did a great job coming in and getting our hitters back in the match,” Torrey said of his young player who picked up 6 assists.
Along with their assists, both Kohrs and Klinger added 9 service points, as did senior Simon Day, who also picked up 6 kills. Kevin Meyers and Adam Scaglione were the big hitters of the day for Chatham, picking up 14 and 11 kills respectively. Senior Connor Cockroft, who is rounding his way back from an injury, turned in a solid overall performance, finishing with 9 kills, 9 blocks, and 5 service points.
Chatham improves to 6-2 overall, while staying at 2-2 in league play. Up next for the Panthers is a home match against a young Hudson Bluehawks squad on Saturday, during Chatham’s Panther Pride Day.
