While some tournaments were wrapping up Saturday, others were just kicking off, and a number of local teams competed in games over this holiday break. The Dollars for Scholars event held at Taconic Hills came to a close on Saturday with the Clippers of Germantown capturing both the boys’ and girls’ titles. The Lady Titans fell in the title game, while the boys from Taconic Hills won their first game of the year in the consolation game of their event.
On the girls’ side of things, Ichabod Crane competed in the consolation game of the Glens Falls Tournament, New Lebanon was in the consolation game of the Argyle Tournament, and Hudson fell in the opening round of the Holy Names tournament before competing in the consolation game Sunday. In non-tournament action, Chatham hosted Catskill in Patroon Conference action.
Besides Taconic Hills and Germantown, who were competing in the same event, the only other boys’ team in tournament action was New Lebanon, who faced off with Argyle in the consolation game of Argyle's tournament. Ichabod Crane met Broadalbin-Perth in nonleague action, while Chatham traveled to Catskill in a league game on Saturday.
GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
Germantown 51—Taconic Hills 33
The Clippers remained undefeated and captured the Dollars for Scholars Tournament championship with an easy victory over Taconic Hills. Germantown immediately establishes itself as one of the premier teams in Class D with this impressive victory over the Class B Titans. Germantown used their size advantage and a blistering defensive effort to take the contest easily.
After struggling in the first game of the tournament 6' junior Taylor Race got on track in this game, posting 12 points, 8 rebounds, 8 steals, and 8 assists. After seeing Race play this past weekend. I have to say that if there is a better interior passing post player in Section II, I have yet to see her. With her height and length, Race is a versatile and dangerous player on both ends of the court. Point guard Suzy Wright really helped the Clippers offense push the action, with 19 points and 9 rebounds. After posting a huge double-double in the first game of the tournament, Caitlin Briggs put up another solid outing, going for 9 points and 11 rebounds. For the Titans, only Rachel Preusser hit double digits, finishing with 14 points.
Germantown has this entire week off before returning to action on Monday, January 5, and Wednesday, January 7. First up is a home game against winless Loundonville Christian, then a trip to undefeated Berlin.
Taconic Hills started off their league slate 2-0 before dropping their next two and will return to action on January 5, 6, and 9. Tough road trips to Rensselaer and Coxsackie-Athens precede a just as difficult home match with Hudson.
