ICC FALLS IN SECTIONAL OPENER

02-26-09 - Ichabod Crane hosted Averill Park on Tuesday night in the first round of the Section II Class A playoffs, and despite heading into the fourth quarter tied up, they could not pull it out, falling to the ninth seed 55-46. A pair of juniors, Derick Horn and Josh Ingham, each scored 12 points, while fellow junior Chris Larm added 7 points and 15 rebounds in the defeat.

The game started off fast and furious with a lot of points being put up early. Sean Shattenkirk started the game off with a three-pointer, but the Warriors responded with one of their own on the ensuing possession. The teams traded hoops back and forth as the quarter went on, with a pair of seniors, Shattenkirk and Dan Earley, combining for 9 early points. A three right before the end of the quarter for Averill Park sliced the Riders lead to 1 heading into the second stanza.

Averill Park started the second quarter hot, going on a 11-2 run to begin the quarter. Back-to-back hoops by Ben Gevlin and Chris Larm helped the Riders to get back into it, but again the Warriors finished strong, converting a jumper and then a three-pointer with just three seconds left on the clock. Heading into halftime, the Riders found themselves down 7 points.

The second half was a tale of two different quarters. The Riders came firing out of the half, outscoring Averill Park 14-7 in the third quarter to send the game into the final quarter tied. Unlike the third quarter, the fourth again saw the Riders struggle to convert from the field and unable to stop the Warriors on the other end. After a slow start, Ingham scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to help the Riders fight their way back into it.

The senior trio of Shattenkirk, Earley, and Gevlin had a strong first half, combining to score 12 points, but the trio finished with only 3 points in the second half—an Earley hoop and a Shattenkirk free throw.

ICC finished their season with a record of 15-6 overall, while going 15-3 in the Patroon Conference, which landed them in second place. The Riders will lose just four players to graduation: Sean Shattenkirk, Dan Earley, Ben Gevlin, and Cody Williams. Looking toward next season, the Riders will return a trio of experienced starters in Chris Larm, Josh Ingham, and Derick Horn, while sophomore Mitchell Niemeyer gained valuable experience down the stretch.
