“It has been a lot of fun, and this begins the championship portion of the season,” said coach Wightman. “We have one more Invitational. Then we take those who qualify on to Sectionals, State Qualifiers, States, and maybe even Nationals.”
The boys and girls at Chatham are enjoying their first year participating weekly with nearly 4,000 area high-school athletes in an indoor track program organized by the Tri-County Indoor Track League. There are 4 to 5 meets held each weekend at local universities, along with opportunities to compete at a number of prestigious Invitationals like the Yale Classic, Dartmouth Relays, and West Point Invitational.
The Chatham boys took 6th place in their first Independent League Championship fielding a small team of only six boys for the championship meet. Though the team was small, it was full of contributors, including Ryan Coon with a strong 2nd place finish in the 1600 (4:51.08) and a 6th place finish in the 1000 (2:54.41). Also in the 1000 was senior runner Ryan Nightingale with an impressive 3rd place finish (2:52.94). Nightingale is running track while also rehearsing for the lead in the high school’s musical. Quinn Calhoun ran and jumped to help the team with a 5th place finish in the 300 (40.87) and 6th in the long jump (17’ 6.25”)
First year Chatham Head Coach, Dan Kohler said, “Though we fielded a small squad this year on the boys’ side, we had a lot of talent and heart to work with, which is all you can ask for. Next year we will only get stronger.”
