LOCAL TEAM AND PLAYERS ENJOYING JUCO SUCCESS

Greg Dedrick

After a few years of struggling, the Columbia-Greene Community College men’s basketball program is getting back on track under the guidance of third-year coach Kevin DeVantier. The Twins are right in the thick of things in Region III and are looking to make a run at the National Junior College playoffs, which begin at the end of February and continue into March. Currently sitting with a record of 9-10 overall, 5-10 in the Division, and 4-9 in the Region, the Twins are looking to get into the top 12 and are one game back of that spot in the standings right now. Columbia-Greene has a lot of games left to make up that deficit, even in the Region record, since they have two games remaining in January, both home games, and then eight games in February, six of which they will play on their home court.

Columbia-Greene sets up on defense

The Twins have gotten themselves back into position to make a run at the playoffs thanks to some strong statistical play by a few players and also some great team play. C-GCC currently ranks fourth in Region III in Defensive Scoring because they allow just 67.8 points per game.

Among those leading the way for the Twins are freshman guard Eli Tillerson from Hackensack, NJ. A prolific scorer, Tillerson currently ranks second in Region III in scoring, averaging 23.4 points per game. In addition to high scoring, Tillerson is shooting well from both the free throw line and the three-point arch. Tillerson is shooting a blistering 43.8% from beyond the arc, which is good for second place in the Region, while also knocking down 83.7 percent from the free-throw line, putting him in third for that category.

Freshman guard Robert Dunn

Also performing well for the Twins are freshman guard Robert Dunn from Highland Falls, NY, and freshman big man Kamal Ramos of Brooklyn, NY. Dunn is the top-rated free-throw shooter in the region, knocking down 42 of 50 attempts, or 84 percent. Ramos, the 6’ 5” big man, is third in the area, snagging an average of 12.3 rebounds per game so far this season for the Twins.

Two former Twins players who were also Ichabod Crane Riders—Ian Austin-Michaud and Dalton Austin-Michaud—are helping to lead Hudson Valley Community College this season. Currently the pair of sophomores has the Vikings sitting atop the Region III standings, with a record of 18-2 overall, 17-1 in the Division, and 15-0 in Region III/Division III.
