04-17-09 - Columbia-Greene earned its first win of the season on Wednesday when they knocked off Adirondack Community College in Junior College softball action. The Twins won the first game of their double header 9-2 before falling 5-4 in extra innings in the second game.

"It’s finally nice to get a win," said Twins coach Pete Dedrick via email. "I think the girls can see the hard work paying off." In game one the Twins were able to play error-free defense behind Meghan McNeff, who took the mound to help set up the win. McNeff threw a complete game, giving up two runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out four. "First game all year where we put it all together," added Dedrick.

At the plate, Kristin Knickerbocker picked up one hit and an RBI, while scoring two runs, and McNeff finished 1-2 with a run scored and two sacrifices. Cabrina Collesides collected two hits, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base, while teammate Angel Rivenburgh added a double and two RBIs. "Our bats finally came alive," said Dedrick. "If we can play like that we should win some games."

In game two, the Twins and Adirondack headed to the sixth inning tied at 1, but C-GCC surrendered two runs to put themselves in a hole. Trailing 3-1 in the seventh inning, the Twins fought back to tie the game. "The second game was a fun game to coach," said Dedrick. With two outs and the winning run on second base, Maggie McBroom drove the ball to right field, but the outfielder made a good play to rob the Twins of a game-winning hit. Adirondack ended up scoring the game-winning run in the top of the eighth.

"It was good to see the girls battle back," said Dedrick. "Hopefully we gain some confidence and carry it into Saturday."

McNeff again threw a complete game, this time giving up five runs, only two earned on five hits and one walk, while striking out one. Knickerbocker again put together a good game at the plate, collecting two hits and an RBI. Knickerbocker’s former Taconic Hills teammate Lori Teaney added two hits including a double and an RBI. McNeff collected two hits and a run scored, while Collesides added a hit, a run scored, and another stolen base. Amanda Osborn added two more hits for the Twins.

Columbia-Greene returns to action on Saturday when they will host Clinton at 1:00.
