This past week was an exciting one in Columbia County sports. A number of teams had big wins that put them in prime position to win or at least gain a share of league titles.
Chatham boys’ soccer knocked off Maple Hill, which positioned them to gain at least a share of the Patroon Conference title. Both teams still have games to play on Monday which will determine if one team takes total control of the league or if the teams will tie for first.
The New Lebanon boys hosted Waterford in the final regular season game of the year in the Central Hudson Valley League on Friday evening and came away with a 2-0 victory, taking sole possession of the league title with that win.
A week after defeating Chatham, the Ichabod Crane girls’ soccer team took care of business during a week that included a huge 2-1 win over Greenville to secure for themselves a Patroon Conference crown.
Germantown’s victory over Taconic Hills in field hockey action last week was exciting—not just because it was a great game, but also because it created a three-way tie at the top of the league standings. The Clippers, Titans, and ICC Riders all have a share of the league title with the conference portion of their seasons over.
There has been a ton of volleyball action, and it continues with more games on Monday and Tuesday of this week. Although it looks as though Greenville has a hold of the league title, both Taconic Hills and Chatham are strong and ICC and Hudson aren’t far behind.
We haven’t had a chance to catch much cross country, but it seems that there is a good amount of talent running on the courses this year. The Patroon Conference Championship meet is Tuesday where we will see who’s at their best as the regular season winds to a close.
In football action, Chatham continued to roll with a convincing 55-7 victory over Catholic Central. The win places the Panthers at 7-0 heading into sectional play. Hudson dropped their final regular season game 21-7 to Albany Academy but still made the playoffs, while Taconic Hills fell to Cohoes.
Sectional pairings for field hockey and football were released this week. Ichabod Crane was given the third seed in Class B Field Hockey and will host number six Burnt Hills on Thursday at 3 p.m. Taconic Hills is seeded fourth in Class B and will host number five Hudson Falls also on Thursday at 3. In Class C, Germantown was seeded third and will host number six Hadley-Luzerne.
In football, Chatham is the Class C South Division top seed and hosts North Division number 4 Corinth Friday night at 7. Hudson is seeded fourth in the Reinfurt Division and travels to West Division top seed Schalmont Friday at 7. Taconic Hills did not qualify for sectionals but will have one last “cross over game” Saturday at 1 when they travel to Coxsackie-Athens.
