PANTHERS OVERCOME SLOW START TO BEAT BLUEHAWKS

After dropping two games in less than five days, the Chatham boys’ varsity soccer team won its third consecutive game on Friday, holding off Hudson 4-1 in a Patroon Conference matchup. After going to halftime tied at 1-1, Chatham scored three goals down the stretch to hold on for the win, lifting their record to 9-2 in the league, while dropping Hudson to 2-7.

Things started well for the Panthers as they got on the board just nine minutes into the contest when Andrew Knight sent a long ball over the defense and onto the surging foot of Joe Van Allen, who calmly finished.

As the half progressed, the Panthers kept up their offensive onslaught but were continuously turned away by Hudson goalie Brett Delamater, who came through with a minimum of three goal denying saves, making big play after big play and keeping his team in the game. Finally in the 35th minute, the Bluehawks broke through with a goal of their own to tie things up. A Hudson player got tangled up with a Chatham defender 30 yards from the goal, and a free kick was whistled. Ledug Luna stepped up and spun a perfectly placed kick over the wall and around Chatham’s Steve Oleynek to even the score at one goal apiece.

Once in the second half, all of Delamater’s work was for naught as the Panthers poured it on. Just one minute into the second half Van Allen dribbled through the defense before finishing for a 2-1 lead. Five minutes later, the Panthers were awarded a penalty kick that Andrew Knight finished to extend their lead. The Panthers continued their pressure throughout the second half until they put away the final goal in the 71st minute, when Josh Kohrs finished.

In goal, Delamater made eighteen stops for Hudson, while Oleynek finished with two in the victory. The Panthers continue their season Saturday with the Tamarac Tournament before returning to league action Tuesday against Catskill. Hudson travels to Greenville to continue their season on Tuesday.

The Panthers have five league games remaining on their slate, including their final two against Maple Hill and Cairo-Durham—two teams that defeated them earlier this year. To get ready to make a serious run at both the league and a sectional title, the Panthers must quickly get sophomore goalie Oleynek adjusted to the varsity game, while keeping their offense clicking on all cylinders
