Even without a great deal of height, Germantown took it inside on their opponents in the first quarter. Point guard Larry Niebling scored 6 in the opening stanza, all inside the lane, while Thomas Griffin added 6 of his own.
Griffin kept up the scoring in the second quarter as he scored his team’s first four points. Brandon Jason got on the board scoring five quick points, including knocking down all three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt. After struggling to convert in the first quarter, the Clippers leading scorer, Cody Broast, got his offense on track in the second and scored 8 points, including the quarter’s final four.
Despite their up-tempo style and lack of size, the Clippers did not resort to launching three-point attempts like many guard-oriented teams do. Germantown only attempted three triples on the entire game, one of which was at the end of a shot clock. Instead Germantown scored 28 fast-break points en route to the easy win.
The young Clipper squad played a composed game, keeping out of foul trouble and playing their style from the opening tip to the final horn. Six of their seven players got into the scoring column, including Broast and Griffin, who each scored 20. Niebling added 17 in the win. Without a senior on their roster, the Clippers are quickly establishing themselves as one of the top contenders for Class D title in all of Section II.
Up next for Germantown is Central Hudson Valley League rival Waterford, who also advanced to the tournament finals on Saturday. Earlier this month the Clippers traveled to Waterford and knocked them off by 9 to remain undefeated at the top the league.
