After seeing games and practices wiped out due to the recent ice and snowstorms, a number of teams got in some basketball action before the Christmas break that begins Wednesday for most schools in the area.
Heatly at Germantown 54-50
It wasn’t easy, but Germantown remained undefeated and alone atop the Central Hudson Valley League standings after a hard fought victory over Heatly on Monday. After falling behind 23-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Clippers fought back to cut their deficit to 7 at halftime and just 1 heading into the pivotal fourth quarter. In that final quarter, Germantown outscored their opponents 13-8 to seal the victory.
Sophomore wing Thomas Griffin hit double digits yet again, something he has done in every game this season for the Clippers, as he scored a team-high 18 points. Another sophomore wing Cody Broast also kept his season-long double-digit streak going, scoring 13 points. Larry Niebling added 11 in the win.
Germantown goes out of conference for its next two games as they play Mount Everett Friday at the Taconic Hills Holiday Tournament before playing in either the title or consolation game on Saturday.
Ichabod Crane at Coxsackie-Athens 64-27
ICC used its staunch defense to bury the Indians in a Patroon Conference matchup Monday night in Coxsackie. After ending the first quarter up just 12-11, the defense dug in and held the Indians to just 2 and 3 points respectively in the second and third quarters.
Junior big man Chris Larm notched a career-high 27 points in the win, while adding 15 rebounds. Junior Derick Horn added 10, while senior guard Sean Shattenkirk threw in 9 in the easy win which saw the Riders play a lot of players, eleven of which got in on the scoring.
With the victory, the Riders improve to 4-1 in the league and will travel to Scotia Friday and Saturday to play a pair of tough out-of-conference games, starting with Broadalbin-Perth on Friday.
Hudson at Greenville 59-50
The Bluehawks traveled to Greenville on Monday and had an unexpected battled on their hands, but they were able to escape with the win. Down by 6 at halftime, the Bluehawks exploded for 43 second-half points to come away with the win.
Playing without junior big man Jacori Anderson, Hudson got contributions from Darien Moore and Larell Roberts who each scored 14 points. Barry King added 10, while Justin Brantley hit for 9.
The win helps Hudson improve to 4-1 in the league, just a game back of first. Up next for the Bluehawks is a January 3 showdown at undefeated Maple Hill.
Taconic Hills at Catskill 87-48
The Titans fell behind by 10 after the first quarter, and things never got better as the Titans could not pick up their first league win of the year on Monday. Despite their defensive struggles, the Titans did manage to get into double digits in each quarter on the offensive end.
Dylan Ruffner led the way with 11 points, while Charlie Van Deven had 10. Chris Filli added 8, while Dylan Decker and Mike Jacobsen each added 7.
The Titans look to pick up their first win either Friday or Saturday in their own Taconic Hills Holiday Tournament. On Friday they will host Waterford before facing off with either Mount Everett or Germantown in either the championship or consolation game.
Chatham at Maple Hill 79-46
Chatham was not able to ruin Maple Hill’s undefeated Patroon Conference start as the Panthers fell to the Wildcats on Monday in Castleton. Chatham fell behind 23-11 after one quarter and 42-19 at the half. In the third, they outscored Maple Hill 17-15 but then were outscored 22-10 in the fourth.
Will Gauthier scored 13, while Brian Gauthier added 10. Josh Keyes scored 6, while Parker Niles, in his first game back from a broken ankle suffered during the football season, scored 7.
The loss drops the Panthers to 2-3 in the league. Up next for Chatham is a Saturday January 3 trip to Mechanicville.
