LET THE GAMES BEGIN

Let the games begin, or—more accurately—let the games begin again after the ice storm wiped out power to thousands in the area and also a full slate of games. The winter sports season is officially back underway. Wednesday night saw a host of basketball showdowns, including four boys’ games and one girls’ game. The first game of the post-ice storm era actually began on Tuesday with a girls’ basketball matchup.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hudson 36; Catskill 43
The first game after the ice tipped off Tuesday night as the Bluehawks of Hudson traveled to Catskill. Hudson jumped out to an early lead, taking a one-point lead into the second quarter, but the Cats used a big second and third quarter to take control. The Bluehawks were outscored 22-11 in those two quarters, and despite their 14-9 fourth-quarter advantage, it was not enough for Hudson to pull out the win. Samantha Davis led the way for Hudson with 12 points, while Shavonda Cousins added 8. Hudson falls to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the league.

New Lebanon 40; St. Joseph’s 19
Wednesday night, New Lebanon hosted St.Joseph’s and came away with an easy nonleague victory. Taking an eight-point lead after one quarter, the Tigers outscored St. Joseph’s 12-0 in the second quarter to put the game out of reach. The Tigers used a well-balance scoring attack in the win, with six players getting into the scoring column. Alannah Carpinello was the high scorer with 13, while teammate Maggie Springer scored 12.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Germantown 81; New Lebanon 52
The Clippers hosted New Lebanon on Wednesday and cruised to an easy victory to improve to 4-0 in the Central Hudson Valley League while dropping the Tigers to 1-3 in league play. Germantown jumped out to a 20-14 lead after the first quarter and just kept adding to their lead as the game went on. Sophomore Cody Broast poured in a career-high 33 points, including four three-pointers, to pace the Clippers. Three more sophomores reached double digits for this young and dangerous Germantown squad: Larry Niebling netted 19; Mike Wyant 12; and Thomas Griffin 10. New Lebanon senior Ruben Ferguson put up a season high 16 points, while the rest of his team was held to single digits.

Hudson 80; Catskill 72
In a high-scoring showdown, Hudson handed Catskill its first league loss of the season behind 20 points by Barry King and 19 from Jacori Anderson. After falling behind by 10 heading to halftime, the Bluehawks stormed the second half, putting up a remarkable 50 points in the final two quarters in en route to the key early season victory. Larell Roberts and Justin Brantley chipped in with 11 and 10 respectively to help Hudson improve to 3-1 in the Patroon Conference.

Ichabod Crane 43; Rensselaer 33
In a tough defensive battle, the Riders bounced back from last week’s defeat at the hands of Maple Hill to grind out a ten-point win over an always tough Rensselaer squad. ICC jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they held on for the win. Sean Shattenkirk led the Riders with 11 points including a pair of triples, while Chris Larm added 9 points and 15 rebounds. Derick Horn and Josh Ingham added 8 apiece as the Riders improved to 3-1 in Patroon Conference play.

Chatham 71; Greenville 55
After falling behind 14-11 after one quarter, the Chatham defense kicked in, holding Greenville to just 15 points combined in the second and third quarters, while the Chatham offense poured in 40 in those quarters. Sophomore Will Gauthier put up a career high 28 points, including 11-12 free throws. Brian Gauthier added in 15 points while Brandon Johnson added 10. The Panthers improve to 2-2 overall.
