WEEK IN REVIEW: SOFTBALL

05-18-10 - 1:45 p.m. - The latest edition of the New York Sportswriters Poll was released this week, and a few local teams were included. In Class B, Taconic Hills is ranked tenth in the state and is the third place Section II. Ichabod Crane is slotted in at nineteenth in Class A, good for second in Section II. Germantown is fourteenth in Class D, third in Section II.

 

MONDAY

 

Taconic Hills at Greenville

The Titans kept their undefeated record intact on Monday with an 18-0, five-inning mercy rule victory over the home-standing Spartans. Aleshia Link handled the pitching duties for the Titans, going four of five innings and allowing just one hit and one walk.

Link led the offensive attack with three hits including a home run. Alicia Kostszewski and Kylle Proper each added a pair of hits for the Titans in the win.

 

Ichabod Crane at Cairo-Durham

The Riders traveled to Cairo Monday and kept themselves within striking distance of first-place Taconic Hills after posting a 9-0 victory over the Mustangs. Jessica Van Alphen hurled the seven innings for ICC, allowing just two hits and four walks while striking out an impressive saixteen batters.

Van Alphen helped herself at the plate, finishing with a trio of hits and an RBI, while Lindsey Drumm knocked in three RBIs in the win. Reychel Webster added two RBIs, while Becca Smith and Christy Zander each drove in one run.

 

Hudson at Maple Hill

The Bluehawks had a rough go of things on Monday, falling on the road to the Wildcats 10-0. Emily Gaylord went the distance on the mound for the Bluehawks but could not slow down the red hot Maple Hill offensive, but the Hudson offense was stagnant for much of the contest, resulting in the shutout loss.

 

TUESDAY

 

Germantown at Chatham

Two local powerhouses did battle in a nonleague softball showdown on Tuesday when the Central Hudson Valley League leading Clippers of Germantown traveled to third-place Patroon Conference squad Chatham. Freshman pitcher Kayla Doty continued her dominance on the mound for Chatham, throwing a complete game, allowing just one hit while striking out nine in a 15-0 Panther victory.

Leah Layton and Sarah Patzwahl each collected three hits and two RBIs for the Panthers, while Karsyn Sawyer added two hits and three RBIs. Caitlin Gilligan and Courtney Mesick each picked up two hits and two RBIs for Chatham.

Victoria Fuchs and Kori Pough combined on the mound for Germantown, allowing fourteen earned runs on fifteen hits and eight walks while striking out one. Nicole Van Alstyne picked up the lone Germantown hit on the day.

 

Columbia-Greene Community College at Monroe Community College

The C-GCC Twins made the regional playoffs as eighth seed, and on Tuesday, they fell to top-seeded Monroe 10-0 in five innings. Monroe was not just the top seed in the region but also in the country and boasted the region’s Pitcher of the Year, Player of the Year, and Coach of the Year.

The Twins allowed six runs in the first inning before composing themselves and playing relatively even softball through the rest of the game. C-GCC struggled at the plate, picking up just one hit—a Catherine Dodig-swinging bunt single.

Dodig also took the mound and pitched yet another complete game for the Twins. Columbia-Greene finishes the year at 15-10 overall.

On Wednesday, it was announced that former Germantown Clipper and current Twin’s shortstop Suzy Wright was named to the 2010 All-Region Second Team.

 

WEDNESDAY

 

Cairo-Durham at Ichabod Crane

The Riders kept on rolling Wednesday with a 15-0 five-inning mercy rule win over the visiting Mustangs. Mandi Adee took the hill for the Riders and went the distance, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out eight and earning the win.

At the plate, Christy Zander collected four hits and three RBIs to lead the ICC attack, while Adee, Lindsey Drumm, and Jessica Van Alphen each picked up a pair of hits.

Germantown at New Lebanon

The Clippers defeated home-standing New Lebanon 20-0 on Wednesday. No stats were available.

 

THURSDAY

 

Rensselaer at Germantown

The Clippers picked up another solid win, topping Rensselaer 16-1 on Thursday. Tori Fuchs took the hill for Germantown and went the distance, shutting down the Rams. At the plate, Nicole Van Alstyne pounded out three hits, while Patti Cameron, Alexa Comesanas, and Taylor Race each picked up a pair of hits. 

 

Maple Hill at Hudson

The Bluehawks picked up a nice bounce-back win, defeating Maple Hill 1-0 after falling to the Wildcats 10-0 earlier in the week. Ashley Gaylord took the hill for Hudson and went the distance, shutting out Maple Hill and giving up four hits while striking out seven.

Gaylord also scored the games lone run and had a pair of hits. Danielle Kitsock also had a pair of hits for Hudson, while Paige Graziano and Maria Nero each collected a hit.

 

Catskill at Chatham

The Panthers picked up a 15-0 five-inning mercy rule victory over visiting Catskill on Thursday. Courtney Mesick took the hill for Chatham and went all five innings, allowing just one hit and one walk while striking out five.

Mesick helped herself with a hit and three runs driven in, while Caitlin Gilligan had two hits and three RBIs, and Aimee Palleschi added two hits and an RBI in the win. 

 

FRIDAY

Ichabod Crane at Chatham

In a crucial league matchup one-loss, ICC traveled to two-loss Chatham on Friday with both teams trying to keep pace with undefeated Taconic Hills. Each team, surprisingly, plated a run in the opening inning, and the game stayed tied at one until Becca Smith provided the Riders with a two-RBI triple in the seventh to give ICC the 3-1 win.

Erin Wadsworth went the distance for the Riders, giving up only four hits and five walks while striking out six to earn the win. Her counterpart on the mound for Chatham was Kayla Doty, who also went the distance and gave up seven hits while striking out nine.

At the plate, Smith picked up a pair of hits and drove in two, while Lindsey Drumm drove in the other run for ICC. For Chatham, Karsyn Sawyer drove in the lone run, while Courtney Mesick had two hits and Caitlin Gilligan added a single.

 

Greenville at Taconic Hills

The Titans rolled over Greenville 10-0 in Patroon Conference softball action on Friday. Taconic Hills plated three runs in the first and four more in the second before rounding out their scoring with three more in the fifth.

At the plate, Taconic Hills picked up ten hits led by Aleshia Link, Kailynn Keeler, and Michelle Link, who had a pair of hits apiece. Keeler added two RBIs and a run, while Michelle Link drove in two and Aleshia scored a run. Nicole Torchia picked up a hit two runs and an RBI, while Alyssa Van Alphen and Alexis McComb each scored twice.

Aleshia Link started on the mound and went two innings, giving up one hit and striking out six before being relieved for the final five innings by Nicole Torchia, who gave up two hits while striking out five.

 

Cairo-Durham at Hudson

The Bluehawks picked up a solid 3-0 victory over Cairo on Friday, led by Emily Gaylord on the mound. Gaylord went the distance for Hudson, allowing no runs while giving up five hits, walking none, and striking out eleven.

Gaylord was also a standout at the plate, finishing with two hits and a run, while Lindsey Garafalo added two hits and Catherine Sundheim had a hit and a run.
