03-07-10 - 10:30 p.m. - After a week of snow delays the Class B and Class C/D volleyball championship tournaments got underway this week with two champions crowned by time all was said and done.
MONDAY
Cobleskill-Richmondville vs. Ichabod Crane at Chatham
Second-seeded Ichabod Crane took on the third-seeded Bulldogs on Monday in the first of two games at Chatham, and after splitting the season series at one game a piece, the Riders swept Cobleskill right off the court with a convincing 3-0 win.
The Riders started the first game fast before the Bulldogs mounted a slight comeback to make this the closest game of the contest, 25-19. In the second game, Cobleskill got off to a quick start, but that was short-lived. ICC took over and won 25-14 before finishing up with a 25-17 final game.
Junior Will Valley racked up service points all day for the Riders in crucial spots, finishing with 22 and 10 kills. Senior setter David Winch tallied 18 assists, while Alex Maloy added 12 assists of his own. Justin Stall added 10 kills, and Jake Gulisane added 7 in the win, as ICC moved into the Class B finals.
Hudson vs. Cairo-Durham at Chatham
The fourth-seeded Bluehawks looked to even their overall record with a monster upset over undefeated Cairo on Monday but came up short, falling 3-0 and finishing 8-10 on the season. The good news for the Bluehawks is they are expected to graduate just one player from this year’s team.
Cairo came in with all the pressure on them and were shaky early, which resulted in a closer than expected 25-17 first game. The Mustangs settled into a groove taking the next game 25-8 before closing out the contest 25-15.
The Bluehawks were led in the loss by Garett Hobson, who had 8 kills, while Nick Alger added 6 and Matt Rees added 16 assists. |

WEDNESDAY
Ichabod Crane vs. Cairo-Durham at Hudson
The big hitting Mustangs brought home the Class B title by defeating second-seeded ICC 3-1 on Wednesday in Hudson. The Riders struggled out of the gates, falling 25-16 in the first game. Not wanting to fall behind by two games, the Riders fought tooth and nail to pull out a 24-26 second game win to draw even at one game a piece. The Riders were unable to slow the Mustangs the rest of the way, dropping the next two games 25-20 and 25-21.
Will Valley again led the Riders, finishing with 10 kills and 6 service points, while Justin Stall added 10 kills of his own and 3 blocks. David Winch finished with 15 assists, 6 service points, and 5 kills, while Alex Maloy added 16 assists, 5 service points, 3 kills, and 2 blocks in the loss.
The Riders will graduate three seniors from their twelve-man postseason roster. ICC will lose Winch, Stall, and Matt Murphy but will return the likes of Valley, Maloy, Jake Gulisane, and Steve Domino, who played key roles for the Riders this year.
Maple Hill vs. Chatham at Hudson
The fourth-seeded Wildcats continued their improbable run to the Class C/D title, knocking off second-seeded Chatham 3-1 on Wednesday. The Panthers started off strong, taking the first game 25-17. After that first game victory, the Panthers battled closely with the Wildcats for the next three games but couldn’t find off the hot team, falling 25-22, 25-18 and 25-23.
Nick Faxon picked up 16 assists, 9 service points, 4 blocks, and 3 kills in the loss, while Max Streeter added 15 kills and 4 blocks. Josh Kohrs had a big game at the net, finishing with 12 kills and 8 service points, while Wade Klinger finished with 10 blocks, 4 service points, and 3 kills.
