03-07-10 - 11:20 p.m. - With just two teams remaining in sectional play, the Germantown and Ichabod Crane girl’s each advanced to their respective final fours with high hopes for making a run at the finals later in the week. Both teams had their seasons come to a close on Tuesday, a round shorter than hoped.

TUESDAY

Ichabod Crane vs. Holy Names at Colonie

The Riders, fresh from an upset victory over third-seeded Mohonasen, set off to Colonie on Tuesday to take on the second seed Holy Names.  Despite missing their first and fifth leading scorers to season-ending injuries, Holy Names still came in with a lot of scoring options. The Riders came in with a height advantage that they were hoping to take advantage of, but they were in trouble from the get go.

Holy Names jumped out to a 10-0 lead before ICC fought back and went on a 7-0 run of their own to cut their deficit to 3 at the end of a quarter. Holy Names started the second quarter strong, much like the first, and pushed their lead to 11 at the half. The second half didn’t get any better for ICC as Holy Names added to their lead on the way to a 54-39 win.

Despite the size advantage, the Riders struggled to keep Holy Names off the boards. Holy Names also hit three triples, all by Lee Arduini, compared to ICC’s one. The Riders put Holy Names on the free-throw line to the tune of 25 shots, compared to ICC’s 13.

Rebecca Smith led ICC with 17 points and 11 rebounds and was the only Rider in double figures. Alyssa Stall and Sarah Wheeler each scored 6 points, while Shana Barry and Alicia Razounsky each scored 4. Hannah Smith and Morgan Van Alstyne added 2 apiece in the loss.

Argyle vs. Germantown at Adirondack Community College

Second-seeded Germantown took on third-seeded Argyle on Tuesday night at Adirondack Community College, hoping to advance to the finals later in the week. Last year in the Class D finals the Clippers defeated Argyle, and this year in the final four, the Scotties got a bit of revenge knocking off the defending champs.

Argyle jumped out to a 12-8 lead after one quarter and pushed their lead to 13 at the half. The Clippers came out of the half fired up and looking to make a comeback, outscoring their opponents 8-4 in the quarter, but it was not enough since Argyle had a strong fourth quarter and won 47-35.

Freshman guard Jacquelyn Miller torched the Clippers for 26 points, including a 13-of-16 performance from the free-throw line. Shelby Graham was held to just 4 points but grabbed 12 rebounds in the win.

Argyle shot 18 free throws compared with Germantown’s 7. Argyle also hit 5 three-pointers compared with the Clippers' 3.

Taylor Race finished her career with 20 points in the loss. Patti Cameron and Victoria Fuchs each added in 7 points, while Melissa Fuchs scored 1.
