WEEK IN REVIEW: BOYS' SECTIONALS

Greg Dedrick
ccSCOOP Sports

03-01-10 - 1:30 p.m. - The winter weather wreaked havoc with the first round slate of sectional games, moving game days and locations, but as the weekend drew to a close, all of our local teams had gotten their matchups in, and three teams were still alive with hopes of bringing home a Section II championship.

Also this week the Central Hudson Valley League coaches announced their selections for Most Valuable Player, Firsst and Second Team All Conference, and Honorable Mention. Scroll down to see those picks.

FRIDAY

Ichabod Crane v. Scotia at HVCC

The fifth-seeded Riders traveled up to Hudson Valley to face fourth-seeded Scotia looking for the upset in Class A. The two teams battled neck and neck through a quarter, with Scotia holding a 2-point lead after one, but the Riders stepped up their 1-3-1 zone defense and got into the offensive flow in the second quarter. The Riders staked a 31-16 halftime lead thanks in large part to the play of reserves Ricky Pallozzi and Joe Fey. The third quarter was good for the Riders early as they extended their lead, but the sharp shooting Tartans began to get hot from beyond the arch and clawed their way back into the game.

The game got close, but Scotia was never able to close the gap completely. Josh Ingham iced the game with some clutch free-throw shooting late, leading ICC to the 57-51 win.

Chris Larm was too much for the Tartans to handle in the low post, leading the Riders with 22 points. Josh Ingham hit a pair of shots from deep on his way to 10 points, while Joe Fey made five shots from the field to end with 10 points.  Derick Horn added 9, and Ricky Pallozzi and Mitchell Niemeyer each hit a shot from deep and finished with 3 points each.

Up next for the Riders is a Final Four battle against top-seeded Lansingburgh on Thursday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. ‘Burgh relies heavily on three players: athletic forward Sajae Pryor, guard Salaam Knight, and massive 6’10” center Tyler Hammett. The key for the Riders will be to slow the game down and extend on shooters.  Lansingburgh is at its best when getting out in transition and driving inside, and the Riders must take that away.

Hudson at Johnstown

We felt, heading into this game, thatthe key for a Bluehawk Class B victory would be slowing down Johnstown big man Ian Yost. Despite holding all other Sir Bills to single digits, Hudson watched as Yost torched them for 36 points and led his team to a 61-60 win.

Hudson got off to a quick start in the first quarter but faltered a bit before the half. Making some adjustments at the break, the Bluehawks came firing out and retook the lead. With the game on the line, Johnstown did what it had to and squeezed by the visiting Bluehawks.

Larell Roberts made eight shots from the field and finished with a team high 16 points. Talib Barksdale added 15 points, and Lindon Alert added 12. Four other players got in on the scoring action for Hudson led by Jeff Crank, who had 8 points.

Hawthorne Valley at Northville

The tenth-seeded Wildcats kept their win streak alive and pushed it to six as they topped seventh-seeded Northville.  The Wildcats jumped out to a quick start leading, 16-7 after a quarter, and that was enough to help earn the 57-49 win since the two teams played even through the final three quarters.

The Wildcats got scoring contributions from six players, led by an amazing performance by Chrisitian Peterson. Peterson hit five shots from the field, four from deep, and nine from the free-throw line, finishing with 31 points. Allan Gallardo chipped in with 8, while Emil DeJong and Sjaak Smeele scored 6 and 5 respectively.

The victory moved the Wildcats into the second round in the Class D playoffs with a game against Central Hudson Valley League rival Germantown set up for Saturday at Germantown. Check out our ccSCOOP Game of the Week to see our full coverage of that contest.

Hartford at New Lebanon

The Class D fourth-seeded Tigers took care of business on Friday as they topped visiting Hartford 52-41. New Lebanon fell behind early 15-9 after one quarter but quickly established themselves with a 17-10 second quarter. Hartford outscored New Lebanon by 1 in the third, but the Tigers finished the game hot, outscoring their opponents 15-4.

Only five players scored for New Lebanon but that was more than enough. Bryan Potter led the way with 18 points, while Mike Gavrity added 13. Kyle McHugh chipped in with 8, while Todd Ferguson and C. J. Trombley added 7 and 6 respectively.

Up next for the Tigers is a showdown against top-seeded Argyle, a team they fell to in overtime on the road earlier this year. The Scotties feature a balanced offensive attack that has seen three players score over 190 points this year and another two score more than 200. Argyle does not feature great size, so a key for the Tigers is to feed the ball down low to big man Bryan Potter. If they can control the pace and get the ball inside, the Tigers have a shot to advance to the Class D finals.
