01-18-10 - 4:10 p.m. - A few huge games this past week including the first-place showdown in the CHVL between locals New Lebanon and Germantown along with the battle of the unbeaten in the Patroon when Maple Hill traveled to ICC. Plus the big Coaches verses Cancer weekend at St. Rose for the Patroon Conference.

TUESDAY

Chatham at Taconic Hills

The Panthers earned their second win in three games after topping the Titans 64-41. The game was closely played in the first half before the Panthers used a balanced scoring attack to build up their lead and earn the victory.

Will Gauthier led the way with 15 points for Chatham, while Brandon Johnson and Michael Flemming each added 14.  Gilbert Rivera reached double digits for the first time this season, chipping in with 12.

Hudson at Maple Hill

The Bluehawks traveled to Castleton looking to knock off undefeated Maple Hill, but a slow start doomed them from the get-go. The Wildcats went up 21-7 after one quarter and held tough, while Hudson battled back in the middle quarters, earning a 62-47 win.

Larell Roberts scored a team-high 16 points, while Lindon Alert added 11. Four other Bluehawks got in on the scoring action, including Jeff Crank who scored 9.

Coxsackie-Athens at Ichabod Crane

The Riders looked to remain unbeaten but had to hold off the hard-charging Indians on Tuesday night. ICC jumped out to an 8-point lead after one quarter and extended it to 17 heading into the half. In the third, the Riders lead was cut by just a point to 16, but Coxsackie outscored the Riders 20-6 over the final eight minutes. The Riders scored with 12 seconds remaining to pull out the 54-52 win.

Chris Larm had a career day, scoring 25 points and grabbing 25 boards. He was the only Rider to reach double digits, but Derick Horn (8), Josh Ingham (7), Ricky Pallozzi (5), Tanner Wolfe (5), and Mitchell Niemeyer (4) all contributed.

Germantown at New Lebanon

With Heatly’s victory over Loudonville Christian on Tuesday, the winner of the Clipper-Tiger game would remain in a tie with the Hornets for first in the league, while the loser would fall into a tie for second with the Eagles.

The normally powerful Germantown offense was stymied by New Lebanon, as leading scorers Cody Broast and Thomas Griffin were held to a combined 12 points, and Bryan Potter scored 21, leading the Tigers to the 56-43 win and a share of the league lead.

Along with Potter, Mike Gavrity and Todd Ferguson turned in strong games for the Tigers with 11 and 10 points respectively. For the Clippers, Larry Niebling scored 13 in the loss, while Mike Wyannt added 12.

THURSDAY

Maple Hill at Ichabod Crane

In one of the most anticipated games in the Patroon Conference in years, the undefeated Wildcats of Maple Hill traveled to Valatie to take on the undefeated Riders.

In front of an absolutely packed house at the Rider Dome, the two teams went toe to toe for 32 minutes until Josh Ingham sealed the game at the free-throw line and gave ICC a 44-37 win.

The Riders played at their pace, keeping the game slow and low-scoring and preventing Wildcats big man Sean Danaher from ever getting in a groove (7 points and 1-9 free throw shooting).

The two teams played the first quarter even, with Maple Hill getting two big three’s from Chris Despart. The Riders started the second quarter hot, going up 21-14 before Maple Hill ended the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Riders' lead down to just 2 at the half.

The third quarter played out much like the first half with the two teams going at it shot for shot. With 4:34 left in the quarter, David Briggs nailed a three to give Maple Hill their first lead since the first quarter, but Ingham responded with a three of his own on the ensuing possession. The two teams kept battling before Dominic Prinzo made a great pass down low to Danaher to knot the game up at 29-29 with 1:40 to play, but it was again Ingham who responded with a shot from deep. At the end of the third, the Riders had extended their lead to 3.

The fourth played out with a lot of big shots from both squads. Junior guard Ricky Pallozzi nailed a big three with under five minutes to play to put the Riders up four. With just under two left in the game, Ingham drove to the hoop and made a great wrap-around pass to Tanner Wolfe for a lay up to push the lead back up to 4. Despart had a big tap in of a missed shot to pull Maple Hill within 2 late, but that was the last charge for the Wildcats. In the final minute, Ingham nailed three free throws, and Chris Larm added two more in the final seconds, and the Riders iced it.

Ingham had a huge game for the Riders, scoring 20 points and dishing out four assists. Ingham buried four of the Riders' six shots from deep. Chris Larm and Tanner Wolfe each scored 6 in the win, while Larm added ten boards. Mitchell Niemeyer scored 5 for the Riders and added four blocks, an impressive stat from the junior point guard. Senior Derick Horn struggled to find his stride the whole game and finished with just 2 points but contributed twelve rebounds, four assists, two steals, and a block.

SATURDAY

Taconic Hills vs. Maple Hill at St. Rose

In a battle between a bottom-tier team and an elite team, the Titans and Wildcats matched up at Saint Rose. As of Sunday, no results were available from this contest.

Cairo-Durham vs. Ichabod Crane at St. Rose

The Riders followed up their big win over Maple Hill with a solid win over the defensive-minded Mustangs. The Riders started the game on a 12-2 run, pushed their lead to 14 at the half, and held on for a 48-31 win.

Derick Horn bounced back from his 2-point performance against Maple Hill to nail four shots from inside the arch and four from beyond it en route to 20 points. Chris Larm added a big 17 points and sixteen rebounds, while four other Riders contributed single digits.

Hudson vs. Chatham at St. Rose

In one of the more interesting matchups from the weekend, two underachieving local teams were set to meet up. Chatham was looking for a much needed third win to give them momentum, while Hudson was just looking for a win to stay competitive and close to the top teams. As of Sunday no results were available from this contest.
