WEEK IN REVIEW: GIRLS' BASKETBALL

Greg Dedrick
ccSCOOP Sports

01-04-10 - 3:50 p.m. - Not a ton of action on the girls' side of things but enough league games to make the short week important as the teams sandwiched games between two holiday breaks.

MONDAY

Fort Ann at New Lebanon

The Tigers dropped a hard fought nonleague game to fellow Class D team Fort Ann on Monday 26-24. Neither team found much in the way of offense early as New Lebanon outscored their opponent 5-3 and 4-3 in the first two quarters. Fort Ann was able to get their offense on track in the final two quarters, scoring 10 in each quarter while holding the Tigers to 6 and 9 respectively.

Only three players got in on the scoring for the Tigers, led by a big 18 points by Alannah Carpinello. This was Carpinello’s third double-digit scoring game of the year, but a big problem for New Lebanon is getting both her and Geneva Furlano to score in double digits in the same game. Furlano scored just 4 points in this loss but had four double-digit games of her own coming in—none in the same game as Carpinello. Meredith Lukas added the Tigers' final 2 points.

TUESDAY

New Lebanon at Argyle

The Tigers finished up their second game in two consecutive days, action falling to Argyle 64-27. New Lebanon put up a mere 9 first-half points before scoring 18 in the second half.

Five players scored for the Tigers in the loss, led by Geneva Furlano who put in 15, including a 9 of 11 performance from the free-throw line. Alannah Carpinello added 7.

Germantown at Pine Plains

The Clippers captured the Pine Plains Holiday Tournament title with a dominating 56-19 win over the home team.  Germantown jumped out to a 5-point lead after one quarter but used a big 13-1 second quarter to propel them to victory.

Six players scored for Germantown in the win led by Patti Cameron’s season high 26 points. Taylor Race added 16 in the win, while Giavanna Buffa, Melissa Fuchs, and Alexa Comesanas each chipped in with 4.

Greenville at Taconic Hills

The Titans let a big early season contest slip through their fingers on Tuesday as Greenville rallied in the fourth quarter to capture a 45-42 win. The Spartans took a 4-point lead after one quarter, before Taconic Hills came firing back and carried a 3-point lead into the final quarter. In the final eight minutes, the Titans were outscored 18-12 as they fell.

The Titans got scoring contributions from just four players, led by Rachel Preusser who finished with 22 points. Emma Gryner added 9, Alexis McComb had 7, and Whitney Keefner chipped in with four in the tough loss.

Cairo-Durham at Chatham

The Panthers hosted the Mustangs on Tuesday and came away with their first Patroon Conference win of the year in a 40-34 victory. Chatham was down 2 after a quarter but rallied before the half to go up by 2. In the third quarter, the Mustangs retook control as they took a 2-point lead of their own into the fourth. In the final quarter, the Panthers ramped up their effort on both sides of the court, scoring 11 while holding the ‘Stangs to just 3.

Seven players got in on the scoring action for Chatham, led by Marissa Myers who finished with 14 points, including four triples. Karsyn Sawyer added 12 in the win, while Alyssa Keeler and Erika Sheehan each put in 4.

Catskill at Hudson

After facing an early deficit, the Bluehawks rallied in front of their home fans to pick up a nice early season win over rival Catskill on Tuesday. Hudson was down 6 points after just one quarter but outscored the Cats by 21 in the middle quarters en route to a 54-43 win.

Danielle Kitsock buried a trio from beyond the arch as she led her team with 17 points, while Shavonda Cousin added 15. Sam Davis finished with 9 points and picked up some crucial assists down the stretch when Catskill was trying to make a run.  Jenna Turner and Skylar Pertilla each added 6.

Rensselaer at Ichabod Crane

The Riders remained a game behind league-leading Maple Hill after a 52-32 home stand win against the Rams. The Riders outscored Rensselaer in every quarter including a 23-10 advantage in the fourth to earn the win.

Seven different players scored for the Riders and three reached double digits. Becca Smith led the way with 16, while Alyssa Stall and Shana Barry each put in 10.
