02-11-10 - 12:15 p.m. - Just like on the girls' side, both the Patroon Conference and Central Hudson Valley League completed play this week and left teams with just one more week to prove themselves before the post season begins.
Heading into the final week of player three local teams are all in a fight for league titles. In the Patroon Conference, Ichabod Crane is in a first-place tie with Maple Hill, while in the CHVL, both Germantown and New Lebanon are currently tied for first, making their matchup next Friday a pivotal, possibly title-winning showdown.
TUESDAY
Heatly at New Lebanon
The Tigers kept their share of first place in the CHVL and knocked Heatly out of the three-way tie after an impressive 51-40 victory. The Hornets opened the game on a 14-8 run before the Tigers took control and never looked back on their way to the win.
Bryan Potter scored 24 points, including 11 from the free-throw line and grabbed 14 points for New Lebanon. Mike Gavrity added 10, while Todd Ferguson chipped in with 8.
Rensselaer at Taconic Hills
The Titans struggled out of the gate before getting their offense going, but it was too late to close the gap, falling 69-52. The Titans scored in double figures in every quarter except the first, but they were unable to slow down the surging Rams.
Chris Filli, Kyle Preusser, and Mike Jacobsen each scored 10 points in the loss, while Clarence Scott added 9. Four other players also scored for the Titans in defeat.
Chatham at Coxsackie-Athens
The Panthers earned their fourth league win of the year after a 45-34 win over the home-standing Indians. Chatham had an early lead but were trailing heading into the fourth. In the final quarter, the Panthers rallied big time, outscoring C-A 24-10 in the final quarter.
Will Gauthier led the way for Chatham with 18 points including 7 free throws. Brandon Johnson added 10 in the win, while Mike Flemming added 6 and Ian McGrath chipped in with 5.
Cairo-Durham at Hudson
The visiting Mustangs flew out of the gate and never looked back, dismantling the home-standing Bluehawks 58-38. Hudson started slow and never recovered because their offense was stagnant throughout.
Lindon Alert was the only Hudson player in double digits finishing with 17. Larell Roberts chipped in with 8, while Jeff Crank and Talib Barksdale each added 4 in the loss.
Ichabod Crane at Greenville
The Riders jumped out to an 18-6 first-quarter lead before the Spartans fought back to be down just 9 at the half. The Riders blew the game wide open in the third quarter, outscoring Greenville 22-0, before icing it in the fourth en route to a 63-30 win.
Ten players scored for ICC with Chris Larm and Mitchell Niemeyer each scoring game-high 14 points. Josh Ingham added 8, while Derick Horn chipped in with 7.
Loudonville Christian at Germantown
The Clippers picked up a big win over a team that, just a week ago, was part of the four-way tie for first. Germantown went up by 8 after one quarter and added to that lead in every quarter en route to a 78-59 win.
Germantown held Loudonville Christian to just three shots from deep while knocking down seven of their own. Cody Broast hit three shots from deep on his way to a game-high 27 points. Thomas Griffin hit three shots from beyond the arch of his own and finished with 19, while Mike Wyant added 16.
WEDNESDAY
Hawthorne Valley at Berlin
The Wildcats held Berlin to single digits in every quarter but one while scoring in double figures in all four quarters. The Wildcats earned a solid 52-27 win, thanks in large part to two double-figure scorers.
Christian Peterson led the way with 14 points, while Emil DeJong scored 10. Max Ocean added 9, Sjaak Smeele added 8, and Allan Gallardo scored 7.
THURSDAY
Taconic Hills at Ichabod Crane
The Riders hosted their final regular season home game on Thursday and easily defeated Taconic Hills 75-31. The Riders opened the game on a 23-7 run and used a big 21-10 third quarter to help put the game even further away.
Chris Larm finished with 21 points and 15 rebounds, while Derick Horn added 18 points. Ten other players scored for the Riders as they cruised to the win.
Eight players scored for the Titans with Kyle Preusser leading the way with 7. Mike Jacobsen added 6, and Clarence Scott chipped in with 5.
Greenville at Hudson
The Bluehawks bounced back from a tough loss earlier in the week with a 68-45 win over the visiting Spartans. Hudson jumped out to an 8-point lead after one and extended it to 12 by the half. Greenville fought back some in the third before Hudson iced the game 22-8.
Nine players got in on the scoring for Hudson with two reaching double digits. Talib Barksdale scored 17 on senior night, while Nevin Sheldon added 15. Jeff Crank added 9, while Lindon Alert added 7.
Germantown at Waterford
The Clippers went up by 5 after a quarter, extended it to 7 at the half, and blew it wide open in the third quarter, outscoring the Fordians by 10. Germantown outscored Waterford by 7 more in the fourth as they cruised to an easy 58-34 win.
Larry Niebling scored a game-high 21 points, while Cody Broast added 12. Mike Wyant and Brandon Jason each added 7 in the win.
FRIDAY
Hawthorne Valley at Heatly
The Wildcats fell behind by 2 after a quarter and extended it to 10 at the half, but Hawthorne Valley would not be denied. The Wildcats rallied from behind and pulled off the 50-48 upset.
Big man Emil DeJong scored a team-high 19 points, while Christian Peterson added 13. Allan Gallardo scored 9, Max Ocean added 5, and Zane Coffey chipped in with 4.
SATURDAY
Maple Hill at Chatham
The Panthers took a 1-point lead after one quarter against the co-league leaders and extended it to 7 by the half. Maple Hill came storming back and took a 2-point lead after the third and extended it further in the fourth, en route to a 65-54 win.
Will Gauthier hit 5 three pointers on his way to 19 points while Brandon Johnson added 18 in the loss. Mike Flemming hit three triples on his way to 9 points.
Herkimer Community College at Columbia Greene Community College
With head coach Walter Rickart on a leave of absence, assistant coach Peter Dedrick stepped up and coached his Twins against the third-ranked team in the country. The players responded to Dedrick’s approach and fought tooth and nail through the first half even though they were down.
Coming out of the half, the Twins stormed back to within 1 late in the second half. Behind the super-hot shooting of Eli Tillerson, the Twins fought back valiantly but came up short, falling 62-58.
Tillerson finished with 20 points including five three-pointers, while Kamal Ramos added 7 points and 12 rebounds.
“I’m really proud of the guys. They worked hard, and they never gave up,” said Dedrick. The Twins had fallen to Herkimer by 15 only seven days earlier.
The game marked the return to the area of former Ichabod Crane standout Ian Austin-Michaud. Although Michaud did not put up a ton of points, he was crucial to Herkimer’s defensive and offensive game plan and to their victory. |
