WEEK IN REVIEW: GIRLS' SOCCER

11-15-09 - With just two teams remaining in their quests for Section II glory, both New Lebanon and Chatham advanced to their respective classes Final Four, but just one would move into the finals.

FINAL FOUR

New Lebanon v. Whitehall
The Tigers run deep into the Class D playoffs ended at the hands of Whitehall 1-0. The two teams battled evenly through two full quarters before Whitehall struck just before the end of the first of two overtimes.

New Lebanon outshot their opponents and put 11 shots on goal but could not put any into the back of the net. Brittany St. Clair fired a ball to the far post past Tiger's goalie Jill Risko for the game's only goal. Risko made six saves in the loss as the Tigers season came to a close.

Chatham v. Galway
Fresh off their upset of top seeded Hoosick Falls the Panthers continued their run and moved themselves into the Class CC finals with a convincing 2-0 victory over Galway. The Panthers got a goal in each half as the defense held strong for the win.

Fourteen minutes into the contest, Cailey Nieto got her team on the board with an unassisted goal. Then with 19 minutes left in the contest, the Panthers put the contest away with a goal by Regina Behn off an Alyssa Keeler assist.

Chatham fired off 16 shots compared to Galway's 12 while Brittany Lossow made 6 stops earning the win.

CLASS CC FINALS

Chatham v. Cambridge
The Panthers magical run came to a close in the Class CC finals as they fell to the Indians 2-0. Cambridge scored a goal late in each half to earn the victory.

With under a minute left in the first and the game knotted at 0-0 the Indians got a goal by Cheyanne Hall. That goal would hold up until there was nine minutes left in the contest when Cambridge iced the game on a goal by Molly Lauver.

Chatham fired off five shots and two corners in the contest while Brittany Lossow made 8 stops in defeat.

Check back next week when we take a look at each our local team's seasons, in our Season in Review.

REACTIONS

The number of youth on the team shows you just how talented the Patroon was and will be next year. Of the 28 players that made first or second team, more than half (15) were nonseniors. Next year should be fantastic in terms of talent.

I'm not sure I'd move a single player from First Team down to bump another up because I completely agree with the coaches' selections here, unlike on the boy's side where I disagreed a fair amount.

Ichabod Crane had a lot of selections, which makes sense because they won the league. The one other player who I thought had to be at least close for the Second Team was Mariela Jacome. The 8th grader didn't have the stats of some of the other players, but she put up some good stats against good teams.

Same thing with Maple Hill as we had with ICC. A very good team with a good number of selections. Again only so many people can make the two teams, but I'm surprised not to see Taylor Czajkowski, a freshman, but she feasted against the weaker teams in the league.

It's scary to think Young and Van Auken will be back again next year to lead the Greenville attack, and another player who didn't make either team who deserves mention is sophomore Michelle Schoenborn, who was no slouch herself this year.

I think Taylor Wenk from Chatham was good enough this year to be put on at least Second Team since her strength up front provided a nice complement to the speedier pieces already in place for the Panthers.

I was a little shocked that the two names I saw from Taconic Hills weren't Hara Aoki-Saffer and Emma Gryner, and that's no knock on the other two at all. I just thought Aoki-Saffer and Gryner had good years, and before I take any heat, no I don't just look at offensive stats either. I just thought the two most important pieces in any win this year for the Titans were Aoki-Saffer and Gryner.

The only other notable omission I saw was Hailey Hollenbeck from Hudson. I'm not sure how anybody watched a Hudson game this year and didn't feel she's at least a Second Team All League player. That shocked me.
