WEEK IN REVIEW: GIRLS SOCCER

The Patroon Conference wrapped up its regular season on Monday, October 26, with a slate of three girls' contests. We took a look at the Ichabod Crane Riders 4-2 victory over Greenville to give themselves the league crown in our Game of the Week. Monday also featured a pair of other local teams matching up with out-of-county foes.

REGULAR SEASON

Maple Hill v. Taconic Hills
The Wildcats took care of their end of business with a 8-1 victory on Monday. Their win gave them a chance to win the title with a slipup later in the day by the Riders—a slipup that never came. Maple Hill finishes the season 13-1-2, good for second place in the league.

All the scoring was done in the first half, as the two teams combined for 9 goals in the opening 40 minutes. Meeghan Arno scored 2 goals and added four assists while Sierra Legge added 2 and 2. Cheryl Bruen, Taylor Czajkowski, Somer Connolly, and Theresa Fuller each added goals. The lone Titan goal came from Hara Aoki-Saffer on a Emma Gryner assist.

Maple Hill was awarded the second seed in Class CC and is scheduled to face the winner of seventh-seed Berne Knox and tenth-seed Hoosic Valley.

Hudson v. Cairo Durham
The Mustangs hosted the Bluehawks on Monday and the two teams battled to a 1-1 tie through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtimes. Hailey Hollenbeck scored Hudson's lone goal before Brianna Calcavecchia evened the game with a goal for Cairo.

Neither team made sectionals since Hudson finished 3-12-1 and Cairo finished with a record of 4-11-1.

FIRST ROUND of SECTIONALS

With Monday and the regular season out of the way, three local teams looked forward to sectional play beginning later in the week. New Lebanon from the Central Hudson Valley League was the highest local seed after being awarded second in Class D while Ichabod Crane sixth seed and Chatham eighth seed in Class A and CC respectively were each awarded first-round home games.

Lake George v. Chatham
The eighth-seeded Panthers took care of business on their home turf on Thursday with a dominating 6-0 victory over ninth-seeded Lake George. Chatham exploded for five first-half goals before adding in one more in the second half.

Cailey Nieto continues to lead the Chatham offensive with 3 goals and an assist, while Taylor Wenk added a goal and an assist. Regina Behn and Abby Wheeler each added a goal, while Caroline Connor and Alyssa Keeler each had an assist. Brittany Lossow made 11 stops in goal for Chatham in the win.

The Panthers now must fight an uphill battle as they now face top-seeded Hoosick Falls on Saturday morning.

Gloversville v. Ichabod Crane

After a 14-1-1 regular season the Riders were seeded a surprisingly low sixth in Class A and began their quest for a title hosting eleventh-seeded Gloversville. Despite dominating the game for nearly the entire time the Riders fell 1-0 on a goal in the second overtime.

The Riders fired shots on goal at a rapid rate but struggled to finish despite a number of quality chances. Headers, deep shots, short shots, give and goes, through balls—nothing could get the ball into the back of the net for ICC.

After 80 minutes of play the game headed to the first overtime and the teams continued the scoreless drought through 10 more minutes. Early in the second overtime Melissa Snyder finished a corner kick that would be enough to lead the Dragons to the upset.

Despite just having one goal on the scoreboard each team had a goal called back. The Riders looked to have finished a corner kick in the second half, but after a brief celebration the officials decided the ball was in possession of the goalie before having it knocked out. Gloversville took a corner kick late in the game that found the back of the net but was disallowed because it was determined that the ball had crossed the end line and then curved back into play.

The shocking loss ends the Riders' season as they are set to lose eleven players. We'll go into the players lost and key returners more after all teams have completed post season play.

SECOND ROUND of SECTIONALS

Bolton v. New Lebanon
The second-seeded Tigers coming off a first-round bye hosted seventh-seeded Bolton on Friday night and came away with a 3-0 victory to push them into the next round in Class D where they will face either Heatly or Whitehall on Tuesday, October 28, at 3 in Stillwater for a chance to move into the finals.

The Tigers scored one goal in the first half and added two more in the second for the win. Geneva Furlano led the charge with a goal and an assist, while Hannah Springer and Anna Hogle each added a goal. Jill Risko was forced to make just two saves in the victory for New Lebanon.

Chatham v. Hoosick Falls
Facing the same school that knocked off their boys' team a day earlier, the Chatham Panthers came in as big underdogs as the eighth seed facing off against the top team on Saturday. Despite being underdogs, Chatham was able to pull the upset 1-0 on Saturday morning.

Hoosick Falls played like the top seed firing off 26 shots on goal, but Brittany Lossow came up huge in goal for Chatham making 20 saves. After playing a scoreless first half, the Panthers scored the game's only goal as Regina Behn put one in the back of the net off a Caroline Connor assist.

The victory moves Chatham into the Class CC Final Four to be played early next week.
