WEEK IN REVIEW: FIELD HOCKEY
Three local teams made it into the post season for field hockey after successful seasons in the Patroon Conference. With three teams playing to start after the course of a week there is only one Columbia County team left standing.
Germantown v. North Warren
The Clippers, the third seed in Class C, got the field hockey action started on Tuesday when they hosted sixth-seeded North Warren. Germantown struck early for a 1-0 lead and took that lead into half time with sound defense. In the second half the Clippers kept up their defensive intensity while adding more offense as they scored two more goals en route to a 3-0 victory.
Linda Gerlach scored the first and last goal for the Clippers in the win, while Patti Cameron scored and added an assist on the game's final goal. In goal for Germantown, Casey Redmond was forced to make just two saves to earn her shutout.
The Clippers continued their quest for a sectional title on Saturday in the Class C final four when they faced off against second seeded Greenwich. After falling behind 3-0 at the half Germantown got yet another goal from Linda Gerlach assisted by Patti Cameron to pull within two but that was as close as it would get as the Witches added an insurance goal as they pulled out the 4-1 victory. Redmond made five saves in the net for the Clippers in the defeat.
Check back once all our teams have completed play for our Season in Review where we will discuss the players the Clippers will be losing and returning for next year.
Taconic Hills v. Schuylerville
Coming off a Patroon Conference title, the Titans were seeded number one in Class CC and received a first round bye. On Saturday, they were matched up with fifth-seeded Schuylerville coming off an upset win earlier in the week. Despite some great early pressure, the Titans could not find the back of the cage as the Black Horses' keeper came up with some big saves.
The two teams played even through much of the game with Taconic Hills providing a little more offensive pressure but not being able to break through. With less than five minutes left in the match, the Black Horses broke through for the game's only goal, which was enough to knock off the top seed.
Katie Teaney who's been a force in goal all year for the Titans made five saves in the contest, but the offensive could not provide the goals to pull out the win.
Ichabod Crane v. Burnt Hills
The third-seeded Riders competing in the Class B sectionals got their post season underway on Thursday when they hosted sixth-seeded Burnt Hills and won 2-1. The win was a bit of sweet revenge for the Riders, as they knocked off the team who ended their season last year.
Three sports star Rebecca Smith got the Riders on the board in the first half before Burnt Hills evened the score heading into the half. In the second stanza the Riders got a goal by Teresa Sanacore on a Jillian Funk assist. Erin Wadsworth was forced to make just two saves to earn the win as the Riders dominated the offensive action. |
