WEEK IN REVIEW: GIRLS' BASKETBALL

12-27-09 - 10:40 p.m. - Only three days' worth of games this week due to the Holiday but still some important early season match ups as the teams headed into their break.

MONDAY

Berlin at Germantown

The Clippers trounced the visiting Mountaineers 65-24 thanks in large part to a 12-0 first quarter start and 26 points from senior Taylor Race. Those 26 points also put Race over 1,000 points for her Germantown varsity career.

After the fast start, the Clippers extended their lead to 26-3 at the half, before cruising to the victory. Patti Cameron scored 14 for Germantown while Kim Kreig added 12.

The Clippers now enjoy a lengthy break since they won’t play again until January 11, which is good to get healthy, but they must not get rusty from a lack of game action. Germantown currently sits in second in the Central Hudson Valley League with one loss behind only undefeated Waterford.

TUESDAY

Greenville at Hudson

The Spartans went to Hudson on a one game losing streak after starting the season 4-0, while the Bluehawks, after starting the year 0-2, had won three of their last four. Hudson made a major statement with a 44-24 blowout at home.

Sam Davis led the way with 14 points, while Shavonda Cousin chipped in with 6. Danielle Kitsock and Lindsay Garafalo each added 5 in the win.

Hudson improves to 4-3 in the league, which keeps them right in the thick of things behind undefeated Maple Hill and one-loss Ichabod Crane. Hudson will return to action on Tuesday when they host a good Catskill team before taking another week off before returning to action Tuesday, January 5, when they head to Coxsackie.

Taconic Hills at Ichabod Crane

The Riders continued their strong play with a 61-45 win over a feisty Titans' squad. The first half was a battle as the Riders took a 4-point lead after one quarter, but the Titans fired back, taking a 26-25 lead into the half. The Riders got their offense going in the third quarter, outscoring the Titans 24-12 before adding 5 more to their lead in the fourth en route to the 16-point win.

Becca Smith and Hannah Smith led the way for ICC with 16 points a piece, while Haley Ooms added 14, including 7 from the free-throw line. Emma Gryner scored 16 in the loss for the Titans, while Alexis McComb added 10. Six other Titans got in on the scoring action in the defeat.

The Riders' victory keeps them just a game behind undefeated Maple Hill. The Riders are off until Tuesday, when they host Rensselaer, and then are off another week before heading to Catskill the following Tuesday.

The Titans continue to struggle while staying competitive against good teams. The potential is there, and it will be key for them to have a quick start coming out of the break. The Titans return to action Tuesday at home against Greenville before heading to Cairo the following Tuesday.

Chatham at Maple Hill

The Panthers remained winless, while the Wildcats stayed undefeated, with a final score of 55-20. The Panthers were held to just 2 points in both the first and second quarters, falling behind 31-4 at the half, before scoring 8 in each of the third and fourth stanzas.

Only three players scored for Chatham, with Erika Sheerin and Leah Layton each scoring 8 points, while Alyssa Keeler added 4.

Chatham looks to come together in practice over the break and try to find something to build upon. The Panthers will play Tuesday, December 29, and Tuesday, January 5, as they host Cairo and then Greenville and search for their first victory.
