12-27-2009 - 11:25 p.m. - A shortened week due to Christmas Break meant a number of key games before teams took off some time from actual games. Although the overall number of games this week was small, there were some real key matchups.
MONDAY
Ichabod Crane at Taconic Hills
The undefeated Riders demolished the winless Titans 77-16 on Monday. The Riders jumped out to a 16-3 lead after just one quarter, those 16 points for ICC would match the Titans for the game and also be the fewest points the Riders would score in any one quarter. ICC put up 23, 20, and 18 in each of the final three quarters, while holding the Titans to just 8, 3, and 2 over the final three quarters.
Eleven different players got into the scoring column for the Riders, led by Josh Ingham who scored 16 points including a pair from deep. Chris Larm added 11, while Zach Williams added 8. Mitchell Niemeyer and Joe Fey each scored 7 in the win.
Only four players got into the scoring column for the Titans, led by Dylan Dotterer with 9. Mike Jacobsen and Kyle Preusser each scored 3, while Dylan Decker added 1.
The Riders have this entire week off before returning to action with a pair of games in two weeks. On Wednesday, January 6, the Riders host a very good Catskill squad before heading to rival Hudson on Friday.
Taconic Hills continues its quest for its first win and should have their best shot of the young season this Tuesday as they host Greenville. The Titans then have off until Wednesday, January 6, when they travel to Cairo and follow that up on Friday with a trip to Catskill.
Chatham at Maple Hill
The Panthers looked to put a blemish on the Wildcats' undefeated season but came up short, falling 52-33. The Wildcats used a balance offense with nine different players scoring and a brutal defense to earn the win.
Chatham was held to only 4 points in the first quarter before scoring 9 each in the second and third. In the fourth, the Panthers got 11 but also gave up 16.
Seven players scored for Chatham, led by Will Gauthier who was held to a season low 8 points and 0 three’s after averaging 20 a game coming in and having a three in each contest. Tanner Niles added 6 and Brandon Johnson 5, while a trio of players—Ian McGrath, Sebastian Acheson, and Michael Flemming—each scored 4.
Chatham has fallen on some hard luck, finding themselves at 1-6 in the league, but they have lost three games by a mere 2 points. The Panthers have a chance to build some momentum when they host Cairo on Wednesday, December 29, before heading to Greenville on Wednesday, January 6. On Friday, January 8, the Panthers start their second half as they look for revenge on the Rams who topped them by 2 earlier this season.
Hudson at Greenville
The Bluehawks jumped out to a 10-point lead after one quarter and extended that to 22 at the half, holding on for a 72-57 win. Hudson held Greenville to just 19 points in the first half.
Ten players got into the scoring action for Hudson led by Larrell Roberts who had 21, while Talib Barksdale added 18. Jeff Crank added 9, and James Park had 7 in the win.
The win for Hudson was its fourth straight after starting the season 0-3. The Bluehawks return to action Tuesday when they host Catskill. The following week Hudson will host Coxsackie and Ichabod Crane on Wednesday and Friday.
TUESDAY
Coleman Catholic at Germantown
The Clippers hosted nonleague, nonsection Coleman Catholic on Tuesday and struggled mightily against the Class D powerhouse, falling 84-65. The Clippers' defense could not slow down their opponents' giving up double digits in each quarter. Germantown reached double digits in three of the four quarters but was held to just 9 points in the opening quarter.
Three players reached double digits for Germantown, led by Thomas Griffin who had 20. Cody Broast added 18, while Mike Wyant had 10 in the loss.
Germantown has this whole week off and returns to action on Thursday, January 7, when they head to Heatly for a crucial early season CHVL matchup.
Mount Everett at New Lebanon
The Tigers hosted an out-of-section opponent in Mount Everett on Tuesday and came away with a 53-39 win. The two teams played even at 8-8 in the first quarter before the Tigers took a 3-point lead into the half. New Lebanon expanded the lead to 5 in the third and extended it by 9 more in the fourth.
Six players scored for New Lebanon, led by a monster day by Bryan Potter, who scored 27 points, including 12 from the free-throw line. Mike Gavrity and Todd Ferguson each chipped in with 9.
The Tigers look to stay sharp as they face a pair of Adirondack League powers on Monday and Tuesday when they square off with Argyle and Fort Ann. New Lebanon returns to league action on Monday, January 4, when they head to Heatly before hosting Loudonville Christian on Thursday, January 7.
WEDNESDAY
Taconic Hills at Maple Hill
