09-03-10 - DAILY DISPATCHES FROM THE FAIR...

The third day of the Columbia County Fair can best be described as quiet. 1964 - The Beatles tribute band - did not appear to be a big draw and despite the relief from the heat that Friday offered, the midway was much quieter than even Wednesday and Thursday. An informal poll of vendors found sales down. Early in the evening, the annual School Girl Queen Contest was won by won by the hometown favorite - Chatham, which received loud cheers, hoots and howls from the crowd.
At the Boy Scout Camp near the parking area, where this intrepid writer spent his second consecutive night, the boys from Hudson who opened the camp on Wednesday were joined by a few dozen boys from the Valatie, Kinderhook and Hillsdale troops.
Camp fires flickered and laughs were abundant as the boys and their leaders ventured to and from the fair throughout the evening and finally bedded down at midnight.
Saturday at the fair is highlighted by the Firefighter's Parade at 11 a.m. and the monster tractor pull - which draws competitors from throughout the Northeast - in the late afternoon and night. Competitors for the pull were making their way onto the fairgrounds before sunrise on Saturday. |
