COLUMBIA COUNTY FAIR, DAY SIX

09-06-10 - DAILY DISPATCHES FROM THE FAIR...

A YEE-HAW AND A YAWN

The Columbia County Fair closed with a “yee-haw” and a yawn Monday, following six days of action that brought the village to life.

The final day of the fair brought the tricks and daredevil activities of the Painted Pony Rodeo, which brought hundreds to the grandstand in the late-afternoon and early evening. The sixth day of good weather also served as another popular catalyst to attend the fair, with cars once again filling the parking lots and lining the Route 66 entrance to the ground and keeping weery vendors and fair workers busy.

Even after the rodeo brought to a close the activities for the fair on the main stage at about 7:30 p.m., the midway remained lined with children and adults alike looking to squeeze one more ride into their fair activities log.

Overall, food vendors reported a strong fair attendance, with Wayne Fierro, Chatham American Legion Post 42 commander noting that the large crowds on Saturday and Sunday meant near-record sales. By all accounts from observers, the biggest attendance day of the fair appeared to be Saturday, which featured the Firefighter’s Day parade and the monster tractor pull. Craig Morgan’s concerts on Sunday also brought significant attendance to the fair.

Officials with the Columbia County Agricultural Society will likely release final attendance figures later this week.
