will explore “Kitchen Science”

in a program at the Roe Jan Library

COPAKE – Why do muffins rise?

How does water turn into ice?

What are curds and whey and how do you make them?

Those mysteries and much more will be explained and demonstrated by 4-H Volunteer Danielle Camacho in a four-part “Kitchen Science” program for young people Grades 3 to 6 at the Roeliff Jansen Community Library.

The hands-on learning sessions will be held on four Thursdays -- December 1, 8, 15, and 22 – from 4 to 5:30 in the library’s Community Room. Parents are welcome to stay and watch. Children who attend all four sessions will receive a special “4-H Family Activity Kit”.

Class size is limited to 12 participants and will be cancelled if fewer than five children pre-register by November 28. To register, please telephone the library at 518-325-4101.

Ms. Camacho says that “the kitchen is a great place to explore the science behind the food we eat and cook and how principles of chemistry, biology and physics affect food selection and preparation. We will experiment with many kinds of foods,” she says, “and practice the science skills of observing, comparing, and predicting.”

The Roeliff Jansen Community Library, which is chartered to serve Ancram, Copake and Hillsdale, is located at 9091 Rt. 22 in Hillsdale, approximately one-half mile south of the light at the intersection of Rts. 22 and 23.
