Equine Advocates is a national nonprofit, tax exempt equine protection organization founded by Susan Wagner in 1996. Since its inception, Equine Advocates has rescued thousands of horses from slaughter, abuse, and neglect. The organization moved its base of operations to Chatham in 2004 when it established Safe Home Equine Rescue & Sanctuary, currently home to seventy-nine equines—including horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules. In 2006, EA proudly opened the the doors to a Humane Education Center on the sanctuary grounds. Classes, symposia, lectures, workshops, tours, and special events regularly take place at the Center.
