ELIZABETH (BETTY) YOUNG
I am seeking re-election as the Town and County Supervisor for Taghkanic because I have the experience to manage the Town’s budget, improve services, continue making progress on the Comprehensive Plan, and bring high-speed Internet access to as many residents as possible. The difference between my opponent and me is that I pledge to continue keeping taxes where they are, without an increase. My opponent talks of many things she would like to see in our Town, and frankly, there is no way to bring about these ambitious plans without a significant increase in taxes. I know that, because I have twenty years experience managing the Town budget, and I have been able to keep taxes where they are with no increases in the past three years.
My opponent has no experience in Town or County government, no experience in managing a town budget, and will certainly not have the clout and position of authority in the County supervisory role that I have earned in my twenty years as Town Supervisor. I am proud that I was elected Majority Leader at the County level so that I can provide a big voice for the Town of Taghkanic and our residents at the County level.

The biggest issues that voters have as [we] come down to the last week of the election are taxes, the Comprehensive Plan, and high-speed Internet access.
- Taxes. Most residents are worried about the economy and rising taxes. Under my management Town taxes have stayed constant, with no increases at all in the past three years. We have a budget surplus in fact, at a time when a ”rainy day” fund is crucial. I believe we can continue to keep taxes low, while improving services, and meeting the needs of all residents. Unlike my opponent, I am pledging to manage our budget in a fiscally conservative and responsible way so we do not impose any new burdens on our hardworking families and small businesses. A recession is no time for ambitious and costly projects.
- Comprehensive Plan. All our residents have a vested interest in how we finalize this plan for our future. I am committed to ensuring that fundamental property rights are protected, so that our farms, businesses, and homeowners can continue to enjoy their God-given rights. At the same time, we need to plan for growth that can help preserve what we love about our Town, while giving our children and grandchildren the opportunities to live, work, and enjoy our wonderful Town.
- Internet and Cell Phone Access. High speed Internet, data and telecommunications access [are] high priorities for many residents. Thanks to our efforts to bring the infrastructure to the Town of Taghkanic, work has finally started on getting more access to more of our Town. I will continue to work hard with the Town and County to have this vital access reach as many areas of the Town as possible, and as fast as possible. Residents will soon be able to work from home and enjoy the benefits of Internet and communications. We are also currently working with cell phone companies as well to bring service—including 3G Internet access—to the area as well.
