THE RACE FOR
TAGHKANIC TOWN SUPERVISOR
Alan Wilzig and his controversial "racetrack/recreational course" have kept the Town of Taghkanic in the news for the past year or so—both the local news and the New York Times. But there are other issues that concern Taghkanic residents. Some have expressed frustration about the process by which Taghkanic's comprehensive plan was developed. Last winter, some were dissatisfied with the delivery of emergency services during the December ice storm that left much of Taghkanic without power.
These issues and others—fear of rising property assessments and taxes, concern about preserving the town's rural character—provide the background for the race for Town Supervisor in Taghkanic. As in Claverack, the Taghkanic race involves a newcomer to county politics who is challenging a many term incumbent. The newcomer is Democrat Loretta Hoffman; the incumbent is Republican Elizabeth Young, who has held the position of town supervisor for twenty years and is currently the majority leader on the Columbia County Board of Supervisors.
