JOHN PORRECA

My name is John J. Porreca, Sr., and I have resided at 619 Union Street Hudson for a period of 30 years. I have lived in Hudson for 50+ years. I have two grown sons from a previous marriage (John Jr. age 34 and Michael age 29). I am presently married to Dawn, and I have several grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

I am a teacher at the Brookwood Secure Center and teach Property Management Trade Shop to the youth. The program consists of each student passing a written test and hands-on application for a certified shop certificate by the Cleaning Management Institute located in Latham, NY. I attended Oswego University and completed the Vocational Teacher Preparation Courses with high honors. I am a member in good standing with Kappa Delta Pi. I am involved with teaching youth at the Hudson Boys & Girl's Club every Saturday morning along with my wife for our church. The program consists of teaching the children the Bible as well as ethics, responsibility for one's property, treating people properly, learning right from wrong in today's world.

I am quite proud of my previous public servant record while serving the constituents of the Third Ward in Hudson as alderman from 1999 to 2001. I headed up the Finance Committee. I served on the Fire & Police, Waterfront Revitalization, and Public Safety committees. While serving on the Fire Committee, a new ladder truck was purchased to better serve the citizens of the city. While on the Waterfront Revitalization Committee, the old Best Oil tanks were removed and a soil remediation program had begun.

I am currently a member of the Hudson Fish & Game Club, American Legion, DEC Hunter Safety Program in NYS as a certified instructor, Bible Baptist Church of Ghent, and Public School Permanent School Teacher's Certification (NYS). I committed myself to the Hudson Business District's growth by promoting the opening of new businesses along Warren Street. I plan on continuing what I began back in 1999 by working to promote business and industrial growth for employment opportunities. My plan would be to explore the NYS Empire Zone and to revitalize that program here in Hudson. The city has empty industrial locations that currently exist in the Empire Zone designated locations.  The Empire Zone would help a business to locate here by tax incentives, tax breaks, employee reimbursement incentives through the State of New York. We need to revitalize this program before it is too late.

The need to explore affordable housing to balance out our workforce and those that are homeless is of a major priority to the city. The Bliss Towers project must move forward and in order to complete that process an affordable type housing needs to be implemented for a cost savings to take place. I would like to see the city have a much larger and more improved police station (a central station location). The existing location used to be a telephone (NY Bell) location for years before becoming home to Hudson Police. A substation would also be advantageous and would help promote a safe environment in Hudson. The former Washington Hose building on the end of Warren Street in the city would make for a great sub-police station location.

The WWTP [waste water treatment plant] plan has become critical. The elevated costs should not have occurred. A better means of planning out for the unexpected needs to take place by city leaders.

If elected, I will do my best to serve the citizens of the City of Hudson as their public servant. I believe my experience will lead the council forward in making all the right decisions. I can work together with Mayor Scalera as I have known him since attending school together in the city. I find him to be an honest person with the citizens of Hudson first and foremost on his mind.

Win or lose I remain a person of integrity and honesty and will work hard for the city to help move things forward and to keep our taxes down to a minimum.
