THE RACE FOR
HUDSON COMMON COUNCIL PRESIDENT
The City of Hudson is in a situation this year that it hasn't seen for a decade. Rick Scalera, who has been the mayor of Hudson on and off but mostly on since he was first elected in 1993, is running unopposed— something that happened last in 1999.
With the mayoral race as good as decided back in May when the Hudson Democratic Committee endorsed Rick Scalera, who, while declaring himself a Democrat, has run as everything but a Democrat in the last few years, the only actual citywide contest in Hudson is the race for Common Council President. In this race, Democrat Don Moore is pitted against Republican John Porreca. Since the majority of voters in Hudson are registered Democrats, it might seem that Moore, running on the Democratic line with Scalera, is a shoo-in, but this race may well be influenced by a persistent divide in Hudson more powerful than political partisanship: old Hudson versus the newcomers. Porreca has lived in Hudson for more than fifty years and went to school with the mayor. Moore moved to Hudson three years ago after a career that took him from the Hudson Valley to Washington, DC, and back.
