05-14-09 - 9:30 a.m. - The Special Election took place on Tuesday, March 31. After three weeks and three days of contentious counting and legal wrangling, James Tedisco conceded victory to Scott Murphy on Friday, April 24. On Wednesday, April 29, Scott Murphy was sworn in and went to work as the representative of the 20th Congressional District. At that point, with a number of challenged absentee ballots still to be counted, Scott Murphy's lead stood at 399 votes.

Now, six weeks after the election and two weeks after Murphy was sworn in, the New York State Board of Elections has released the final tally of the votes: 80,833 for Scott Murphy; 80,107 for James Tedisco. Scott Murphy won the election by 726 votes.
