04-25-09 - After twenty-four days, there is finally a winner in the special election, and after three months, 20th District will once again have a representative in Congress. On Friday afternoon, James Tedisco conceded to Scott Murphy, and today at 3:45 p.m., Scott Murphy held a victory rally in Glens Falls.
At the time Tedisco conceded, Murphy's margin of victory was 399 votes, but there remains an undetermined number of ballots that have not been counted, and it is unclear at this point when or if those ballots will ever be counted.
In Columbia County, there are 228 such ballots. If yours is one of them—and you can find that out by contacting the Board of Elections—we invite you to share your story with ccSCOOP and our community of readers. |

The scene at the Columbia County Board of Elections on April 8 as the grueling process of reviewing absentee ballots began. Many of the ballots that were challenged still remain uncounted.

My husband, Curt, and I recently learned that our absentee ballots for the March 31, 2009, special election have been challenged on the basis of residency. I find this so very hard to believe. I am a lifetime resident of Columbia County and have been registered to vote here since the late 70’s. I have never registered or voted in another county. I own only one home and that is in Columbia County, NY.
My husband, Curtis, moved to Columbia County about ten years ago. We got married in 2002 and reside together in our Hillsdale, NY, home. He is also registered to vote in Columbia County. We both voted in the last general election.
We requested absentee ballots for the special election as we were vacationing in Florida during the month of March. Our ballots were mailed to my parents’ address in Florida. We left Florida on March 30th by car and arrived home on April 1, 2009.
What could possibly be the real basis for this challenge? I have sent letters of protest to both election Commissioners. We want our votes counted!
