Half the counties are now reporting that they have completed counting non-military and non-federal absentee ballots. In five counties—Columbia being one of them—the count continues at a gruelingly slow pace. Democratic Commissioner of Elections Virginia Martin reported that, in three hours yesterday, only 78 ballots were reviewed and half of them were challenged. Since the counting began in Columbia County, 311 absentee ballots have been reviewed and 122 of them have been challenged. When the counting stopped yesterday, they had just finished reviewing the absentee ballots from Copake. (They are working in alphabetical order through the towns.)
Military and federal absentee ballots were due back yesterday, but Tedisco has asked the State Board of Elections to extend the deadline for another 15 days. So far, of a total of 1,872 military and federal ballots sent out, only 415 have been returned.
