ICE STORM UPDATE

Press Release

Columbia County Board of Supervisors Chairman Arthur Baer reports that a teleconference was held with Columbia County School District Superintendents at 5:00 pm this afternoon [December 15].

During that teleconference, it was recommended to the superintendents that the Chatham and lchabod Crane Central school districts will remain closed Tuesday, December 16, and the Superintendent of Taconic Hills School District stated they will remain closed Tuesday and Wednesday, December 16 and 17. This recommendation was made in part due to the numerous roads that are still impassable or have restricted lane usage within those various districts and the 13,336 customers still without power within the county.

Public safety is the primary concern of the officials in Columbia County when making these recommendations to the school districts. Chairman Baer expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the superintendents for their input and concern with the serious situation the county is facing during this disaster. "These educators have been diligent with dealing with this situation, and their overwhelming concern for the safety of the children and that of the public safety and utility workers is truly evident. We are fortunate to have them as our school district leaders."

Another teleconference is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon [December 16] at which time the county will make another recommendation to the school district officials.
