What You'll Need:

8-inch baking pan

6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cut into ¼-inch slices (7 ½ cups)
5 tablespoons sugar (more if the apples are not sweet)
Butter for greasing the pan

For the Topping:
⅔ cup flour
⅔ cup chopped pecans
½ teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
⅔ cup brown sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
⅓ unsalted butter, at room temperature, cut into 6 pieces

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter the baking pan.

Combine the apples with the sugar and arrange in the pan. Set aside.

Combine the flour, nuts, spices, brown sugar, and baking powder. Work the butter into the mixture with your fingertips until it is evenly distributed. Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apples.

Bake until topping is crunchy and golden brown—55 to 60 minutes.

Serve warm or at room temperature with vanilla ice cream.

Serves 6
