COLUMBIA COUNTY GETS A GREAT ICE CREAM. FINALLY.

06-02-11 - All last winter I was looking at the Main Street storefront diagonally across from the Crandell Theatre, a location that has seen a few food-related businesses come and go. COMING SOON - ORGANIC ICE CREAM. Really! When? This summer. The thought that there could finally be a good quality ice cream in Columbia County that could show kids and adults alike that the real stuff doesn't come from Dairy Queen or Unilever.
Winter's turned into an all too brief spring and now it's summer. The wait is over. Ella and Matt White are here with Golden Organics Ice Cream, made with cream from a New York/Pennsylvania Coop Farm and it is utterly sensational, devastatingly rich, with a 16% butterfat content, the flavor, the texture, concentrated and lush.
The cinnamon ice cream is made with Red Ape cinnamon from Sumatra. The chocolate is from Germany, intensely dark and full-flavored, not too sweet. Blackberry tastes like the memory of a late summer afternoon. Coffee makes you wipe away a nostalgic tear, bringing to mind the late, lamented Schraffts.
Organics? Try grass-fed, free-range organic ice cream. No artificial anything, as the commercials used to say and still try to get away with saying. These folks are up to something and I want to be around to watch and to taste and to stay close by all summer and into the fall. They're already selling duck eggs and regular eggs and there are plans for cheeses and maybe even meats and they'd better stay open during the winter.
