07-23-11 - Where did they come from? Beautiful vocals, exquisite harmonies, haunting depth of sound. They perform their own compositions as well as traditionals and they're as refreshing as a mountain breeze. Mountain Man has a new audio/video release Live at the Wiltern, so they may be from LA, but they're here now in Hudson.
PRESS RELEASE
Their live show is breathtaking - hauntingly beautiful three-part harmonies, totally a cappella (with an occasional acoustic guitar.) Though they perform mostly original compositions that they all write together, they also do a few covers, such as the traditional Appalachian folk song "Come All Yee."

In some senses, it's astounding that Mountain Man is gaining so much newfound popularity. Their recent addition to the Newport Folk Festival and gigs with Wilco and at places like NY's Mercury Lounge have catapulted this essentially female a cappella vocal group to new found audiences.
Molly Erin Sarle, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Amelia Randall Meath met at Bennington College, in the small town of Bennington, Vermont. They are from the West, Middle West and Eastern United States and they are stunningly good. It was not until Molly visited Bennington during a term off that the seeds of Mountain Man were set.
The music of Mountain Man is nestled in the tradition of American folk, but their songs are shaped by the three searching voices, encompassing harmonies and a shared belief in and love of the world. |
