MILLAY COLONY OPEN HOUSE 2010


The Event:
The Millay Colony for the Arts is holding its annual Open House Benefit on Saturday, July 24, from 5 – 8 pm. This year’s event will feature music curated by internationally renowned composer and performer Laura Andel, alumni art for show and for sale, and great local food and spirits.

The Music:
The event will feature brief performances by cutting edge musicians, each representing a different musical genre. Former resident and composer Laura Andel will curate the musical performances. Originally from Buenos Aires, Ms. Andel has performed around the world. Her recent commissions include the Festival of New Trumpet Music, the Bronx River Art Center, and the Brecht Forum.

We will also have a local Jazz combo playing while we chat and sip in the meadow.

The Menu:
The evening will feature a cocktail party with homemade organic sausages from Fleisher’s Grass-fed and Organic Meats, bread & cheese from Hawthorne Valley Farm, wines selected especially for the occasion by Michael Albin of Hudson Wine Merchants, and an array of enticing hors d’oeuvres.


The Art:

Throughout the evening, resident’s studios will be open for guests to visit. We will also be selling art, books, broadsides & CDs from Millay Colony alumni.

Artmaker/bookmaker Christopher Kardambikis will lavishly and lovingly decorate the Colony buildings and grounds.


The Location:
The cocktail party will be held at the Millay Colony in Austerlitz, located on the grounds of Steeple top, the estate of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. We will have tables, chairs and food and wine galore in the wildflower meadow that lies between Colony Barn, and the Main Building, with easy access to the artist studios.

Event Details:
Tickets for the benefit event are $75 per person, $20 for children under twelve. This includes parking, food, drink, studio visits, and entertainment. All donations to the Colony, including ticket costs, are tax deductible.

Our mission is to nurture and promote the vitality of the arts by providing writers, visual artists and composers with a rural retreat that encourages creative intensity and exploration in the context of nurturing and communal artistic community.
