07-09-10 - 8:55 a.m. - Given the advance buzz and almost frantic online word-of-mouth, The Kids Are All Right promises more and then some for anyone starved for that most elusive of species, A Smart Literate Comedy. It's directed by the supremely talented Lisa Cholodenko, who made another supremely funny movie a few years back entitled Laurel Canyon, in which Frances McDormand played my idea of Mother of the Year. The Kids Are All Right features two mothers (Julianne Moore and Annette Benning), a sperm-donor father (Mark Ruffalo), the kids, relationships, loyalty, love—all in one movie. It's especially terrific that it's the Chatham Film Club's first offering since reopening. Focus Features' James Schamus will be there to introduce it.
