06-25-09 – 2:35 p.m. – The Theater Barn in New Lebanon has dubbed its 2009 season the “Summer of Love,” and the first play of the season—the romantic comedy Crossing Delancey—opened last Friday night, June 19. The play, written by Susan Sandler, was originally produced in 1985 by the Jewish Repertory Theatre. The movie based on the play, starring Amy Irving and Peter Riegert, was released in 1988.
Crossing Delancey is set, of course, in New York City and involves some classic New York characters: the young modern woman; the Jewish grandmother who still lives on the Lower East Side and wants nothing more than to see her granddaughter find a good Jewish man and get married; the grandmother’s matchmaker friend; and a handsome pickle vendor.
The Theater Barn production is directed by Artistic Director Michael Marotta, and the cast includes Theater Barn alumni Eleni Delopoulos (Kathy & Mo; Almost, Maine), Carol Charniga (Over The River…, The Mousetrap, etc.) and Michael Frishman (The Graduate) and newcomers Jean Liuzzi and Nick Ciavarella. |
